Talking "ASPEN: God please let my car start" skibum story blog

Some of you may know that I've been writing my skibum experiences before. Well I'm looking into putting them in paperback soon so I thought I would do this blog that was suggested to me to get feedback. I put up all of the Aspen story I have so far. I hope my stories wake up your skibum memories about your epic ski days, and how wonderful those memories make you feel each and everytime you think about. Tell me what you honestly think

    P.S.
I have alot of editing to do because their html codes are kinda strange so you might see a bunch of [i] and [b].

Dude, I didn't read it all, but it surely brought back some memories. I hitched from CSU after realizing that I was skiing more than I was going to class. Tried to get a job doing dishes at the Motherlode for food (found out that they already had 10 illegals doing that, but they gave me a free dinner anyway); crashed at the St. Moritz for two weeks until I ran out of money; used my last .75cents to buy a coke at the Cantina and ate 5 bowls of free chips and salsa; may have roomed with the same Pierre; went to a very similar SkiCo hiring session; and remember when you could get a shot and a beer at Little Annies for $1.25.
    The new reality:
Hitch-hiking is too dangerous; the Motherlode is gone; not sure if the St Moritz is still there; a coke at the Cantina is probably $3.00 and I'm sure the chips and salsa aren't free; Pierre is probably wrestling gators in the bayou; the SkiCo is waaay corporate; the Tippler bit the dust; and a shot and a beer at Little Annies will cost you $15 (once they get their liqour license back from the recent drug bust).
The only things that haven't changed are the mountains. It's all about the turns man. It's all about the turns.
    Good work!

TJ- good luck with your writing!

Blogs are great ways to get exposure and feedback. Two of the blogs I read on a regular basis have been springboards to solid bookdeals for their authors. Keep at it and I look forward to checking out more of your stories!

Wow, I thought I would read a few lines while I had a cup of coffee and get on with my day. Instead ended up reading the whole thing. Great stuff!

There are a number of ways to self publish this. I'm working on a book through lulu.com. It's pretty cheap and easy. THough my book sucks, really how many folks care about bug lifecycles, and your's has some real commercial possibilities. I think you should try to sell this outright to a publisher. I'm a few years behind you, I went out, for a month, in 1987. Didn't work just blew through the money I got from my HS graduation. But this really brought back a lot of fond memories.

My folks still give me crap and I'm now 37 years old. I sincerely hope my daughters take an adventure like this be it skiing, beach bumming, etc. before they move on with their lives. It really is a great experience.

    Thanks for the writing!

nice read TJ. good thing i own my business, cause i sure was unproductive for the better part of the morning.
i thought your writing and dialogue was excellent and it kept me wanting more.
I also was a skibum in mammoth in the early 90's (yes i scored some epic years there) so it was easy to relate to.
Love the pot references too. (hence my screen name) Not to promote drug use, but weed and skiing seem to go hand in hand for me and my mates.
Nothing better than burning one on the lift or in the trees and scoring some epic pow.
Keep up the good work and please post when you have updated more of your blog.

Glad you guys are liking the story. Finishing up the chapter to cover New Years now. It is a long one. It was one hell of a party at the paradise. Stevie Nicks, Eddie Van Halen played. Kept catching people fucking in the womens restroom all night long. It was so fun

Man I don't know. Last I knew Tim (not real name) was working at Club Chelsea. Karl Stall knows who I'm talking about.

    TJ,

I'm excited to keep reading This was very compelling. You've pre-empted "The Last Season" for the time being. I really believe there's a market for this. I can't tell you the number of friends I had in HS that followed a similar route. I can think of 5 people on my HS ski team that headed west out of Minnesota right after they tossed the graduation caps. I was so jealous, I was a good boy and went right to college, but did manage to take a full month off and ski. I had actually applied for and was offered a pro patroller position and every time it snows I kick myself a little about not taking that opportunity. Then this summer a position came up for me in Park City and I turned that down to continue on with my own business, but it still hurts every now and then. I guess I'll always bestuck in Minnesota but it was fun to read your story, brought me back to those days planning our escape, smokin a little, and reading through pamphlets from various ski areas trying to deceide where to try for a job.

Thanks again, and when this get's published, I want an authgraphed copy. Just tell me where to send the money!

Hey thanks. Almost done with the next chapter. Should be up in about 3 hours. If you want to read other ski stories of mine about Jackson Hole, Steamboat, Utah and others I've written a whole bunch over at
