Contrary to popular belief, the longest days of the year don't end around the summer solstice. There happens to be some strange anomaly that occurs sometime in September. It happened today. Now I get to look forward to time slowing down until it almost seems like it has stopped.
You might be wondering what happened today? I will tell you.
I got up for work just like any other summer day. Yes, it is still summer. I drove to work under thick cloud cover. The Ghee was bare and you could see that the Tetons had gotten a bit of snow last night even though you could not see the peaks. Looked like the snow level was just above 10k feet.
By 10:30am today the Ghee was completely hidden by clouds and the temp in the valley was around 41 degrees. Snow at the Ghee? By 1:30pm the clouds had lifted and the Ghee was showing her new white veil that looked so sexy. Did I just say sexy? Ok, I did.
Now I had to go up and feel that sexy veil she is now sporting. 2 inches of wet and sloppy fresh snow at the base gave me a little chubby. I made a couple snowballs to throw and drove back home. I spent all of about 5 minutes with her. Its my second time enjoying the first flakes to fall on her and last time I didn't even get outta the truck so I think I am making a little progress.
I know its going to melt once the suns rays hit it but OMG it was noice to feel snow again. White, cold and wet. Wet is not my first choice for snow but its the first snow of the season so wet is ok.
Today is the day that marks the slowing of time for the next couple months. Time works pretty consistent during the summer. Then around mid to late September time slows down and continues to slow down until it comes to almost a standstill just before the lifts open. Once the lifts open time seems to turn on the afterburners and blurs by so fast in a cartoonland way that it is hard to comprehend what is going on. Pow, fresh tracks, rock drops, pow, hiking, pow...ect.
Anyway, welcome to the 2 longest months of my year. Snow has fallen and now it starts. I got to touch it and I get to watch it come and go for a month and then the true agony begins when it no longer goes away but there is not enough to ski on for another month. Time is now officially slowing down in anticipation of the upcoming season.
The new year did not start on January 1st. It started today on September 15th. January is mid-season and has its reason for a big party but mid-September gets seriously overlooked IMHO.
Now I can't wait for the first snowfall here in the valley when time really starts to slow down.
