since this thread has only recently been unearthed again, here are a few around these parts:

a honda element with HELIUM (seriously)
    a suburban with SRUSLY
a VW eurovan with NO MAP
a coworkers old nissan had plate WTF and constant offers to buy it.

my grandparents (now both passed) always had new hampshire PING and PONG.

I admit to having a vanity plate. couldn't resist, as they're a one time fee of $30.
My 89 toyota corolla wagon's plates are FLYWHP. picture is on home computer.

personal theory on vanity plates: more common where they are cheaper. like here, or new hampshire. it's really easy to make a one time payment of $30 for a bad idea.

You'd have to pay me a lot more than $30 to rock that plate.

I don't know about lame but
People should learn endurance; they should learn to endure the discomforts of heat and cold, hunger and thirst; they should learn to be patient when receiving abuse and scorn; for it is the practice of endurance that quenches the fire of worldly passions which is burning up their bodies.

Not necessarily the lamest, but certainly memorable one:

"STOLEN" on a speeding Mercedes S class.

    Or

    "ILOVETOFU" (a hippie chick driver)

When I was probably 11 or 12 I saw a plate that said "Def Leppard" or some variant to make it short enough). even then I thought that was pretty lame.

In my early 20s, I was riding in my friend's 320i, drinking something mixed up in a gatorade bottle, listening to Nas on the way to a club, feeling like we were king shits (ahh the stupidity of youth). Then a modded up (IIRC) Neon went flying by us with the vanity plate "playa1". I made fun of that car for months. I was talking to another friend who told me that he knew the kid, guess he worked at Wally world like 60 hours a week and sunk all of his $$ into that car, that made it even funnier/more pathetic.

Could you imagine being the cop that radios in the plate? Somehow I doubt she gets many tickets.

Saw one awhile back while driving home from work that said "SNORLAX" which sparked the following conversation:

me:That's a weird one, kinda sound like...
coworker: A sleeping pill and laxative combined
me: What a terrible product! you pass out and shit yourself...
