    What Length Gotamas?

    Hey everyone,

Just a quick opinion question, especially for anyone who has already skied the new 06/07 Gotamas.

I'm planning to order a pair this season for a new backcountry and big mountain ski. I'm mounting them up with the new Fritschi Freeride Plus.

But I can't decide on the size. I'm not a huge guy (5'9" 155-160lbs during ski season), but I can power skies and I ski pretty hard. I'm not trying to sound cocky, but I live in Winter Park and put in 100+ days a year, so the skies will get more than occasional use.

I'm thinking of getting the 183 Gotamas, knowing the Volkl measures material and they will end up being more like 179 in a standard tip-to-tip measurement. But I don't know if that will be too big and maybe I should go for the 176 instead.

I ski a K2 Work Stinx for my tele ski, but that's pretty short (167) and a Volkl Karma for my usual alpine ski in a 177 (and I love that one, although I've thought about selling it and getting the 169 instead).

    Any thoughts?

now that we have that out of the way
i would guess 183 without question

an observation was made yesterday that a 179 k2 SV was the same length as the 05/06 190 gotama. not sure how much has changed length wise this year, but yea, 183 seems to be right and 176 would definitely be too short unless all you ski is nothing but super tight trees.

    Uhh....Get the 190's, no question.

If you "ski hard" and can "power skis" then I can't see how you could go wrong with the 190's. Your older skis most certainly will seem tiny after you start riding the Gotamas. And really...don't worry about the length. The older Gotamas are very user friendly, and I assume the same for this year, even if they stiffened them up. Sack it up and go big, you wont be sorry....unless your a pussy

the thought behind the 183 was the he was going to be touring with them and might not mind the lighter weight and slightly higher versatility in tight places and bushwhacking. but yea, i guess it depends how much touring vs how much inbounds, length of tours, type of tours etc (all those questions UAN asks)

plus, he "skies" in winter park, so there's lots of trees in the backcountry and lots of bumps at the mountain.

I concur, good fit for the 183cm "skies." 190 too long if he's considered going shorter on the other boards - 176 too short for the short-"skieing" Goats and a 5'9" guy who rips up the Frasier Valley.

If you're skiing the Karma in a 177 and loving it, you're not powering skis as much as you think. The 183 should work, don't listen to the guy who says 190.

Go with the 190. Gots ski short and the 190's will feel good. Or go with the 197cm if you can find them in Europe.

Christpunchers, his question was the 176 vs the 183.
If your vote is for GO LONG, then LONG DUCK DONG = 183cm.

The 183 will be fine. Now delete this thread.

As someone who is the same as height as you, 5'9", (but 130 lbs), (and a girl, if it matters) I skied 177 Mantras last year and have also skied the 176 Gotamas (the skis I'm getting for this year) and I'd say don't get the 176. I moved to Utah now, but last year I was living in Jersey and skiing 20 - 30 days a season if I was pretty lucky, and I absolutely loved both skis in that length (all of my skiing was done either in utah or jackson though). If you're skiing 100+ days a season, and weigh more, and are a guy, and "power skis" I think you'd be unhappy with anything shorter than the 183. But then again, I would also think that you'd be unhappy with 177 Mantras

My 183 Gotamas are almost identical in length to my 179 Pistols.

I weigh more than him (~175 nekkid) and I ski the 177 Mantra and love it.

But maybe I don't power my skies.

Guys, you are missing the point, this dude "powers skies". He needs something burley like a 194 B Squad, otherwise he might overpower the sky.

I'm 5'7" and tour on some 183s. I did have some 176s that I bought in 04 but they really were too damn short when things got deep and not so steep. Once the corn came that extra bit of edge was like night and day.

183 all the way, unless you are sky-bound with that power, then you need something really big...like an old 205 race ski...long skis truck, short skis.....

Lowell Skoog can power skies too.
I can't understand why people are frightened of new ideas. I'm frightened of the old ones.

It's a lot easier to power skies when you're wearing clothes.
