    Surfing in Tahiti

I'm heading to Tahiti in March and would like to do some surfing while I'm there. Does anyone know if you can rent boards on the island? Any info would be greatly appreciated.

    expensive expensive

hey man, watch out for the scams down there. I just spent a month in the south pacific and us (blowins) as they call us are not the most liked people. watch out for scams, they are going to try and take every Frank you have. even the cabbies. boards are super expensive down there. at the quicksilver shop in papeete, a stardard short board goes for around $900 new. i did not see any board rental places. I flew Air New Zealand and was traveling with a 7 foot coffin, they only gave a bit of a hastle, but with a few smiles and kind words, i got by with only spending a few bucks here and there to have my boards put on. much of the time they are going to ask you to put it on a later flight that they say is a cargo flight. don't let this happen. many surfers i met, did this and everyone of there surf cases were broken into and then delivered. one kid even had one of his boards stolen. so lock up your case, and make sure you physically see it go under the plane. i'm not kidding, every person you come incontact with, is going to ask you how much for your boards, it gets a bit annoying. be prepared to give away boardies, wax, sunglasses, hats, and even a board. if you don't, you won't get any waves. stay away from the island of Huahine, the locals are brutal and will littlerally fuck up your shit, if your lucky enough to make it out to the reef. My stay was not the most pleasant of trips. this was on my way home from a 5 month stay on the gold coast in australia. fisherman will most likely be your transportation to and from the reef, pay them well the first time and offer them some cold hinanoes and you will have a buddy for the rest of your trip. no tip and no hinanoes after will leave you paddeling back to shore. i did it, not fun...

    any other ?'s just ask
