    Geek Rant (NSR)

How the hell do you other Software Developers deal with colleagues that are incompetent.

I work with a developer that has a l'il more seniority than me, has much more say regarding intellectual direction of projects, yet has no clue how to do his job.

Does not understand 1NF much less Boyce Codd, has no clue about why we use Foreign Key Contraints or Master Tables.

We will we agree on a data model and build-it. So I go to do my coding to match the data-model, then come back later to find it completely remodeled in a non relational flat table manner, that will not function with the code I've written....

This happens over and over and over and over, difference between us I have BS in Computer Science, him 30 Software Engineer and PHD. So frustrating no one in office will listen to l'il ole me.

    Oh so frustrating.........

I become abusive and call them a liberal whenever they disagree with me.

Not that I'm not a fan of always learning, but I've been doing this now for bout 10 years. Just never worked with someone so obstinate.

Its just the whole "Im a PHD with 30 years experience, Legend in my own mind" thing that gets old. This guy got his PHD before there was relational data theory, much less high-level languages. He's just got these really sexy credentials that obviously dont' mean a thing, maybe time to recluse himself to the universtiy system, where incompetence reigns behind the Abbreviations that follow a signature

Don't even get me started about OO methodology

So, how do you combine a relational data model with OO methodology?

Shall we start a geek forum on here, so we can discuss the advantages/disadvantages that the mnemonics of replicating a datamodel into a functional "is a/has a" OOP methodology. And how that implementation makes a shits difference to the end user.

Reminds me of a former co-worker..."I've been doing this for 20 years...no, don't check in the code, just e-mail me the binary..." Ugh.

A different PhD guy insisted on writing his own C++ string search n' replace for a piece of an install...guess what code always broke the build and had memory errors...

Who cares? In 2-5 years you and the 30+ year expirence PHD are both going to be out of work. The speed at which software development is going to get shipped overseas is going to blow minds.

Get good at writing specs, becuase that's all that going to be left stateside.

a year ago I would have told you to keep your relational model and oo model in sync with this here modeling kit.

but I quit becuase listening to this type of shit /\ /\ /\ every day makes you want to stick hot pokers in your eyes. Now I'm much happier helping people find buildings to buy/sell rent/lease.

In 2-5 years I plan on doing that full time also, already have already aquired two 4 plexes that are positive cache flow.

Hope to retire competely from real work by 35 so I can heli-ski and snowmachine all winter and windsurf all summer . . .

Let's keep the big picture in mind, too.
    It's idomatic, beatch.
