I concur. This one hasn't been in the snow yet, but very soon I suspect:

    Cute pup Adam.

But I'm going to have to play the Golden Retriever trump card.

No snow pics, but here is some more doggie stoke.

I am a big retriever fan, Labs first then chessies, and goldens last. Sorry to all the golden mags out there, but I see way too many goldens that are "a few bricks short of a load"

Currrently I have this chessie, but I do miss my labs.

all three of those breeds are generally better in water than snow, due to the composition of oils in the hair. Elkhounds, on the other hand....

(but that is true, I have seen a lot of Golden's pretty much crippled in the BC due to ice buildup on the paws...)

An aside, plenty of short bus labs out there, too! What is with the OCD ball fixation thing in some of them?

Chessies are frigid water dogs. They NEVER get cold. My Chessies love(d) the snow. Frequently, I would take them snowmobiling and cross-country skiing with me. I am absolutely 100% certain that a Chessie would make a perfect BC dog.

~11k feet, ~20mi into the winds

I won't name the place, but it's special. She is a 80lb dog, so this ol' boy was large....

    Wind River BC, near pinedale

More Wind River BC, near pinedale

You can exhaust a lab pretty quick in powder, less than 1k vert and they are done, even if 2 of you pack the skin track down as hard as you can. Be very careful with them....they won't quit, and that's a problem....make sure you bring water for them too.

IF your going to get a little useless yappy dog, just get a damn cat. They are much more quiet and not so fucking annoying and retarded.

Chessies kick ass. We used to live in siberia, and we had one named Chester. He would jump off of this 10 foot dock onto ice, break through the ice, and bring pack a huge slab looking so proud. He was a great dog. Chesapeakes do great in the cold, and unlike most northern breeds, don't require such rigorous training.

That is the coolest thing about Elkhounds, they are pretty much BORN trained. Truly!

EDIT: mine is a mixed breed from a rescue shelter....

    I agree.
Sputnik is a mutt from the animal shelter:

Our dog Baka, also a mutt, was rescued from a dumpster as a puppy:

Makisha is our only dog from a breeder (and the hardest to take skiing):

    Makisha and Sputnik:

    All three:
