Where the hell do you live now? It sounds like you live in a place where rents are super cheap and taking a cab 20 miles to and from the bars is a common occurence and apparently cheap. Yes, you can take a cab from Boulder or Denver to Broomfield or wherever else you want to go. But it is going to cost you more than you spent at the bar that night.

I live in Denver, just west of downtown. I can't imagine a better place to live. I rarely have to drive anywhere. I can ride my bike to work. Walk 15 minutes and be smack dab in the middle of Lodo mayhem. Or I can hang with the yuppie crowd in Highlands. There are tons of restaurants and bars at all different price points within walking distance. I can walk to a rockies/avs/broncos game. I would have to drive to the nearest olive garden though. Boulder is cool but I am not in college anymore, nor trying to pretend like it. Access to the climbing and trails is a major benefit though. I also don't make much more than your roommate expects to and I live alone in my own house with a yard and ski, climb, bike, and drink quite a bit.

Maybe I can convince him to live closer to downtown. What are good cheap places closer to Denver? Is arvada nice? LoDo is way out of our price range. It is so hard to tell where the bad neighborhoods are in Denver.

I love living in Golden. There are plenty of cheap places here. We have a few decent bars and a river that is really nice in the summer. It's much more of a "small town" atmosphere rather than the broomfield/highlands ranch/lakewood sprawl. It's 10-15min to Denver and 20min to Boulder.

I cannot find a two bedroom in Boulder for under 800. We found a two bedroom in Broomfield for 600. I am sure there is a reason for this, but at this point, we have no furniture and my roomate is poor. Maybe we will sign as short a lease as possible and then decide in 6 or 9 months if we want to move to Boulder.

I take it there are not many taxi's available on a wild thursday night in Boulder?

right now all the slumlords are ripping off the returning students. things will loosen up in about 1 - 2 weeks.

you want cheaper, near downtown, with some nighlife, and not too hard for your pal to get to Boulder?

Try Capital Hill, between say 10th and Colfax, and oh I dunno, someone help me out here, Logan and say Downing? Lots of 1 bedroom apartments in houses that you two can cuddle up in for cheap, maybe a few 2 bedrooms. Very close to downtown, a bit more funky and lively, some decent nightlife, not too far to the highway to get your buddy to Boulder. Just SE of downtown.

Another fun developing area is east-ish Uptown, between around say 15th and 19th and mebbie Pearl over to uhhhh Lafayette or so. Just E of downtown.

Or you can try up in what I think they're now calling Berkeley Park, which is really just the next extension of the Highlands activity. This is NW of downtown, across the highway, and a bit further north, which is a good compromise for you guys. Actually, this isn't a bad idea. Mostly it's fixer-upper houses right now, but you guys could rent a small, cheapo house if you don't mind the surroundings. Around 44th and what is that over there than runs through the highlands, Lowell? Something with two ls. Willing to spend more, do as McSquared said, and find something at the north or west edge of Highlands, which is centered on 32nd and whatever that street is with two ls.

You'd definitely want to check any of these places out in person, as these neighborhoods are still all a little spotty. But there's very few truly bad places in D-town. Even 5 Points is starting to look pretty civil compared to 20 years ago.

I think he is afraid that he won't find a job right away. He has some leads in Boulder and his uncle and cousins live in boulder, and I personally like Boulder more than downtown, it is just the nature of my job requires me to work in a large city.

That really sucks that you can't grab a taxi to Broomfield. Can you get a ticket for riding your bike while intoxicated? Maybe I could ride back and forth...lol

Trying to ride a bike between the people's republic and broomfield would probably not net you a DUI arrest, b/c you probably wouldn't survive. But, yes, especially in Boulder, you can get an impaired biking ticket.

As far as the Beamer and Audi are concerned...the payment on those vehicles are like 550 a month. I have a jeep and he has a used Envoy and both our payments are between 350 and 360.

I personally don't care if I have a great apartment. I would rather have the extra money to play with, but I think you are all right. Boulder would be a much better place to live.

Denver doesn't really have bad neighborhoods. Try eastside LA, west Chicago or the south Bronx.

First, your roommate is unrealistic, and doesn't realize the additional money spent on gas to live in a place that sucks. $325 a month is fucking ridiculous, tell him to wake up.

If I can pay $400/month to live in Aspen, I'm sure he can find something for $325/month.

I lived near Stapleton. It is easy to get everywhere (airport, downtown, I-70,I-25) , near all kinds of shopping, pretty quiet, and affordable.

That is within a taxi ride distance and we would much rather party in Boulder than in Denver.

I don't know what taxi service you plan on using,but I live in S. Boulder @ Table Mesa & Broadway, about 2 miles from Pearl St. It's an $8 ride without tip.Bring some cash for transport,cause you're gonna need it!

Highlands is a cool up & coming place, but my buddy that lives there has had his car stolen 2x's & broken into 2xs.It's a 92 Accord with 240,000 miles on it.GO figure

Living in Golden and partying in Boulder are not two things that go well together. There is no transportation besides car between them and 93 is a dangerous road in the best of conditions.

I really think you will be disappointed living in Broomfield when you really want to live in Boulder. The commute to Denver is not that bad from Boulder and you will find yourself driving into Boulder all of the time. The 13 miles, while not really that far, will get old. Broomfield is basically a large suburb that is growing. The only real night life is centered around the Flatirons Crossing mall, and nothing there is very cheap for some reason.

Also, in almost 15 years living in Boulder County, I have never seen a DUI checkpoint. Not to say they don't exist or that you can't get pulled over, but I have never seen one.

Well thank you for all the help. I guess we can let this thread die now. We decided to just sign a six month lease in Broomfield. I am sure we will move after the lease runs out and we have a better idea where we want to live. Until we get out there and get settled it probably is best to have the cheapest rent possible.

Icanseeformiles...I am from Pittsburgh...I live on icy roads 4 months out of the year...so yes I am very good on icy roads.

Once I get out there over the weekend of the 2nd and 3rd I have the next week off and don't start work till the 11th. Maybe I can meet some of you Boulder mags once I get settled.

It may suck living in Broomfield, but I need to have an apartment before I get out there, and besides how much time can you possibly spend at your apartment when you are in the mountains every weekend???
