Question good resorts to instruct in, Canada BC

Sup! maybe this thread will die easily under the weight of all the crap being posted but I thought id give it a shot.

so my plans for working in japan again have fallen through so im going to go to canada, already have my working holiday visa worked out. where would you recommend to apply for work as a ski instructor? ive got nzsia csi, and will have nzsia stage 1 by the end of this southern hemisphere season (roughly equiv to csia level 2)

    places ive been looking at:

kicking horse - looks like a sick mountain, nice small town, probably would be working in kids club though due to my lack of experience, anyone done that?

fernie - chatted to a few nz'ers who have worked there and sounds nice, not too massive a town, good hill, etc

    any other recommendations?

    preferences:
    a) a sick hill
    b) nice deal for working there
    c) nice small town but not toooo small, e.g banff would be overkill for me i think
    d) nice long season would be good

    cheers

intro, i do believe you must be certified with the canadian ski instructors association to teach skiing in canada.

here is the current list of openings for RCR (resorts of the canadian rockies, who own a few hills including fernie):

    good luck and have fun

Red Mountain is pretty cool. The town of Nelson is a cool little town.

Just to clarify what nutcase said -

Red Mountain is close to Rossland - cool town of about 3500 people. Medium sized hill.

Whitewater is close to Nelson - town of about 10000 people. Whitewater is a small hill.

Fernie is about 5000 people - another nice town - medium sized hill.

All three are nice hills. Whitewater is small but has big backcountry terrain to access - not sure what the instructing possibilities would be like

nice work, thanks for the link.

whilst i could be wrong i've been told that the NZSIA qualifications are recognised around the world, including canada, as they both abide by the ISIA standards... main place i cant work is france, apparently.

leelau/nutcase, thanks will look at those resorts

You will be able to do your CSIA level 1 in your sleep. Also look on the CSIA website - they advertise jobs on there. I'd think Whitewater was pretty sleepy on the work front. Pro would be lots of free time for you, con would be lack of money (good for you if you have reserves to fall back on). Fernie must be busier these days, but when I worked there in '96/'97 it was super quiet. I rarely worked, but that was great because it was an all-time winter.

    a) most small/med hills will have some, but to get more touring is a great option once you have the ness avi skills

    b) good luck, ski area don't pay well teaching = many days on snow, but a lot less ski days. You are working or waiting to work5-6 days a week and get a multi area pass that you have notime or money to use.
If you want to ski on the trip, get a night or afternoon job serving, or in a ski shop so you can ride every day.

    c) banff is 7000 people = more jobs, more options, more places to buy food, all places are walkable, and bus service to the 3 main hills

    d) banff has a 7 month season (7 months of work, try finding a job in nelson in Nov)

    good luck

hopefully i wont need to do CSIA as well as NZSIA, i think id rather get some new skis than pay to certify twice!
