Trip: Powder Video Awards at the Regis in Aspen, Friday, January 23, 2004
Blurred Elevens, Allison (see the East Vail Chutes TR), Danny (friend of Blurred’s), and I on a road trip to Aspen for the Powder Video Awards Premier.
Allison was the designated driver. We overestimated the drive time and Allison’s driving style (she is such a guy) so we actually got to stop in Glenwood Springs at the mountaineering store there and still got to Aspen an hour early. This meant free parking and extra time for drinking. Being most unfashionably early, we toured the Regis, a five star hotel. Wow. $6 beers, anyone? How about trophy wives in pink fur coats? We were definitely in Aspen.
I talked to the ESPN camera crew for a while before people started arriving. The hotel wasn’t quite ready at the time we thought it would be, but we got to stand around and talk with Klaus Obermeyer for 20 minutes which was very cool

(Klaus Obermeyer and Allison)
Klaus is awesome. He is a brilliant and down to earth person. Blurred had met him a few times before. Klaus is a 87 year old pioneer of ski industry who could school me on the race course with his Stocklis any day of the week. He skis faster than he is old.
“Any day you do not ski, you can never get back.” –Klaus Obermeyer
They had the February issue of Powder everywhere. It rules.

Blurred seems quite enthralled with the issue.
They finally opened the doors to the award room and we got a great table (in the non VIP section, of course). http://www.biglines.com/photos/blpic17748.jpg 2004 Powder Video Awards
We got to watch “The Power of Four,” a promo of the Aspen mountains that was very well done except the narrator had a horribly annoying voice. Lots of clips… announcements. Then we got down to the award presentations. They showed the clips for each nominee in each category then announced the winners. I cannot express the amount of stoke that I felt during the presentations. It is sufficient to say that it hasn’t even begun to wear off even after 3 days. The amazing ski stoke on twin projection screens combined with the phenomenal sound and light system and being in a room full of professionals far far above my level was mind blowing. The excitement in the room was so incredible you could ski it. I felt like I was at the Academy Awards. That is exactly what the Powder Awards are! I would go to the Powder Video Awards over the Academy Awards any day.

Several of the Powder Mag editors and staff announced the awards and two hot chicks in revealing dresses handed the awards.

Shane McConkey and his Full Throttle Award
Most of the recipients walked right by our table so we got to talk with some of them.

Blurred about to make out with Jamie Pierre
Talking to Shane was awesome. Kristie and Sarah are H-O-T!
While watching this incredible spectacle, I decided that I want to make some sort of tiny movie this year, even if it a shitty little basic thing made from digicam footage. I also decided I want to try and get some still photography published.
The awards ended and there was good music and dancing… fantastic party. Apparently, Blurred and Allison can dance pretty well… but I think that about everyone since a monkey with epilepsy could school me on the dance floor. Blurred and Allison were dancing next to Olenick (who won a silver in slope style yesterday at the X-Games). At the end of things, some guy got up and did some freestyle rhyming… ski rap… it was decent too.
It was frigid outside by the time we went to leave. We gave two pros a ride back to their car, which was parked at Boogies. A guy from New York City and Mike Deshenaux (Deschenaux? sp? from Switzerland) is a pro rider who (was supposed to have) competed in the pipe at the X-Games today (delayed). It took us a while to find the place.
Mike: “Where is the Boogies?”
New York: “Da thing is that Boogies iz right around here.”

The Armada House!
(no pics… A70 outa batteries)
We were then invited back to the Armada house. Mike stayed and gave us directions back. The Armada house was a three-story luxury home that must have cost $10 million. The party continued. We all ended up in the basement. There were all kinds of pros there… lots from Session 1242. Pep Fujas is a pool shark… for a little while… at least while he was on my team (sunk 5 balls to win). Blurred and Danny played pool with Pep and Eric Iberg for something like 2 hours and kicked ass too. I talked a lot with New York, Mike, and Eric Iberg (skier/cinematographer/producer) named. CR Johnson was there to as was Kye. There was also an attractive pro snowboarder gal named Mindy or something like that. The whole night was obviously fuzzy. Allison went off somewhere with Mike and we were all invited to crash for the night. What an unbelievable party. We woke up in the morning with hangovers all around and hit the rode back to Summit.
This was an unbelievable part and I felt very privileged to have been there. I would give my left nut to go back again next year.
KD! THANKS A MILLION FOR THE HOOKUP!
Add in guys!
