After showing these pics that brooks sent to my phone to MD9 and him saying “holy shit, you have to post those”. I decided to email them to myself and postem up………

These are from around June 7th, about 2-3 months after Brooks crashed off Big Jims….. See below cliff…..

    The initial damage

The text came before the pics read as “getting brain sugary, talk to you tomorrow” June 7th.............
Then I got these fucking things………… one.....

"like my turban?" (text that acompanied it)

Nice horse shoe punch. Was it "ski rodeo days" when this happened?

    I hear chicks dig scars.

Man I'm glad I never had one go that bad.

    Edit:

I've had a good concussion and a scar on the chin from breaking a zipper off when the knee compressed against it... also spat up blood, fractured the rib and had an imprint of my car key on my chest after a different knee-chest compression.

My scariest huck ever was narowly missing a 3ft diameter tree after overshooting the landing by about 20 ft on a 35-40fter. I'd hit it the day before and it snowed another 12 that night, but the next day hit it with a few more people. I hiked back up to the same take off point, but with the extra people it packed out the in run. I had a few seconds of oh shit!! then hot tubed ~5-10 ft directly in front. In the air though, I thought I was going to hit it square. That was the last time I saw Jebus.

My roomate Brooks missed the big jims session 2 weeks ago and stepped up today, missed his landing mark by 5 or 6 feet and only sunk in about 4-6 inches. (would have been waist deep another 5 feet down hill) Just before haskins and I got to him he came to, but was still out of it; skied about 150 yards before we made him sit and wait for the patrol. His knee went through his face and split his chin about an 3-3.5 inches long/1 inch across and didn't even realize what it was that made him that way. As he was getting stitched up it was like he was on a 3 min repeat loop with the same questions, asking if I could drive his car home (he didnt even drive today) So the called the medic and he is getting CT scans and shit done right now. I'm sure he will be fine, but that was the first time I saw someone get absolutly crushed............

He always wears a helmet, and this time was no exception. That said, it didn't help much in this instance since the damage was done by his knee slamming into his chin. The only thing that may have helped a bit would have been a mouth guard. It saved my ass plenty of times when I got a football helmet to the chin. In later years, I even augmented this with a padded chin strap.

Fuck, I should just wear my football helmet from now on...

    Ok, now I'm confused....

How did a knee do that? Scar is from brain surgery not 'intial damage' as described?

Err: nm, now I understand...what brought about the surgery?

My guess is coup contracoup injury with subdural bleed and subsequent blood evacuation. Stitches not entirely consistent with a trauma flap, at least the type I've seen, but could be.

Hopefully he didn't also experience tongue trauma. A lot of my skiing friends have had hucks-gone-wrong end in a 2 week vow of silence due to having bit through theirs.

The CT scan done after injury was normal.

I never saw the MRI that was done months later that apparently showed a HUGE subdural that required emergency evacuation.

The mechanism is that he landed on what amounted to hardpack from 60+ feet. His knee hit his chin. You don't need direct impact on your skull to have a huge bleed in or around your brain. There are deceleration, rotational and other forces that tear vessels. In this case, likely a small vein that wasn't bleeding very briskly or at all at the time of the CT scan done on the day of injury, but then the blood accumulates over months and the vessel doesn't stop bleeding.

He apparently felt better the minute he woke up from surgery, better than he had for the past several weeks.

    He is tough kid.

And no, in some instances helmets do nothing. In this case, nothing much would've helped besides landing in the 5 feet of pow.

Delayed subdural hematomas are not uncommon.

Epidural hematomas are nastier and from arterial bleeds; often seen right away. Far less common thank goodness.

Damn dood. That's even gnarlier when not viewed on the tiny screen of a cell phone. Glad to hear they found it when they did and that he's doing better. So crazy. Makes me want to be sure I've got a 20x20 buffer pow field around my intended LZs in the future.

A full face and mouthguard may not have prevented any of this, but I'm sure they wouldn't have hurt anything either. [/learned the hard way, 2 concussions of my own]. I haven't had another concussion since upgrading lids and regularly wearing a mouthguard.

my knee made contact with my chin this march, broke jaw, shattered teeth, still dealing with it for a while to come. wear a mouth guard. I think they're more important then helmets at times.
