    Change for a Nickel

In light of all the recent conversation about change for a nickel, tonight I decided it was high time to put my money where my mouth was.

I glued five pennies to my skis.

    Here is the trip report...

First thing was to arrange all the supplies. I needed skis, it felt great to pull them out storage for the first time since May. I chose to use Gorilla Glue - because crazy glue just wasn't going to cut it (I'm not sure gorilla glue will last, either), a ruler to help evenly space the pennies and help make a straight line, scotch tape to hold the pennies in place, a pizza box to keep my tabletop safe, and clamps - because the gorilla glue instructions say to use clamps.

Oh yeah, I needed five pennies. Wouldn't you know that I couldn't find any? Just when you need them, you can't find 'em. So I robbed my son's college fund. I'll bet you thought you were core.

Spacing the pennies an inch apart works fine (not an inch between them, but an inch between the leftmost extremes of the pennies.)

    I removed the ruler..

and stuck a piece of scotch tape on the pennies. they were now held in position, and all I had to do was place them.

Gorilla Glue's instructions say to dampen the surfaces. Ok.

I put a drop of gorilla glue on each penny (sorry for the poor image quality, btw.)

And used a napkin to make the drop a "light spread."

I then placed them on the skis, right underneath the atomic logo.

and applied a couple of more pieces of tape to hold it in position.

Then it was just a matter of putting the ruler on top, and clamping down.

A few hours later, I decided to remove the clamps.

    with the clamps removed

    I then removed the tape.

A little glue spread out from underneath the pennies..

(again, sorry for the poor image quality)

But I'm not complaining! I'd say it came out just fine, and now I just have to hurry up and wait for it to start snowing again!

    A job well done.

Can't wait to take these out and come up with strange answers to people asking me why I've glued five pennies to my skis.

increase of rotational mass for mad 1280 steeze. Or, it will help prevent you from lawn darting when attempting next years 300+ drop, helping you to maintain an upright position in the air.
Or, "I'm just a retard who spends a lot of time on the internets".
THAT is gonna be my line. I am gluing em' to my helmet if possible.

A Nickel might look kinda cool countersunk into the tip.

    Cut it in half.

That way you'll be able to tell your left from your right ski.

I don't discriminate between a left and right ski. I just randomly flop 'em down and go for it. Even edge wear is a plus.

Do you think the glue will break when the tip flexes?

God knows, but isn't living dangerously just that much more exciting?

There's a few ways it could be done. Ideally, a hole punched in the topsheet that landed right over the nickel counterset in the tip would have a layer of glass over it. It wouldn't go anywhere.

Have you flexed the ski manually? lay a bag of ice on top and give it a shot.

Uh, hate to break it to ya, but your math is all wrong....

"Nickel for your thoughts" just doesn't have the same ring to it.

"A dime saved is a dime earned?"

"Not a quarter to your name?"

    "Change for a nickel?"

    How about "that's worth a pretty half-dollar"?

The phrases may sound strange now, but according to the U.S. government, the penny is in trouble.

A pending federal bill would eliminate the coin, requiring the cost of every item to be rounded to the nearest nickel.

The reason? Due to the rising cost of metal, it actually costs about 1.4 cents to make a single penny, which adds up to a $20 million loss for the U.S. Mint each year, according to FoxNews.com.

can't wait to hear about the head injury due to the penny shooting off the skis tip and into someone. (like the old dynastars with the red "trouble bubble" that always popped off after a slapdown landing)

    looks good....

Gorilla Glue doesn't bond some types of plastic, so I am curious to see how it works on a topsheet.

Don't cross post this to Epicski unless you want to be inundated with the physics of how you destroyed the ski through ruining it's balance and flex. You may not even be able to turn them anymore.

    Course SL's, baby!

Man, I loved those skis....Nothing like crashing gates with 207cm noodles on your feet.

(And I *never* had the damper pop off!)

Technically referred to as 'the dog doo doo on the tip'.
