Arrow Jeep Liberty 2002-2006 Owners! Read this!! Recall....

And after 3 times of telling them our 2003 has noises coming off the front end that do not sound good over the last 6 months, they are finally going to do something about it.

Jeep Liberty 2002-2006 Recall for Front End

    Tuesday August 1, 2006 11:01 PM

    By KEN THOMAS

    Associated Press Writer

WASHINGTON (AP) - Chrysler Group is recalling more than 800,000 Jeep Liberty sport utility vehicles because of the potential loss of steering control, the automaker said Tuesday.

DaimlerChrysler AG spokesman Max Gates said the front suspension lower ball joint could experience excessive wear and looseness, leading the ball joint to separate. The recall affects 832,000 Liberty SUVs from the 2002-2006 model years.

Gates said the automaker has received 111 complaints about the problem and reports of three injuries. He said in many of the complaints, the ball joint failed, dropping the vehicle's front end onto one or both of the front tires.

The front suspension has troubled the Liberty before. The automaker recalled more than 300,000 2002-2003 Liberty vehicles in November 2003 because of problems with the ball joint, but some of the parts were damaged during the shipping process or installation.

Earlier this year, the government opened an investigation of the 2004 Liberty after receiving complaints about the ball joint separating. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said the alleged separations happened on Libertys with 25,000 miles to more than 67,000 miles.

The vehicle has since been redesigned and Gates said the automaker believes the ball joint part will not experience the same wear patterns.

Owners will receive notices about the recall in September and the ball joints will be replaced at no cost.

Potential loss of steering control, eh?

Well, as long as it's nothing important.

Yeah, no shit and this is the main vehicle Taylor rides in.

I called already and they won't take appointments for this till it goes thru in September and I gave them an ear full. It was the same dude I argued with that the front end is not right.

I love my Jeep, but Chrysler is making me mad.

I have seen other maggots with Libertys, so please read.

Demand an independent shop fix it, since your dealer has proven themselves to be a scumbag.

Send a certified letter, return receipt requested, to your local Jeep dealership confirming the phone conversation, enclosing a copy of the Chrysler recall notice, and reiterating your request that they repair your recalled-for-safety-reasons vehicle ASAP. If you feel like it, also cc Chrysler HQ on the letter, certified, r/r/r. Keep records yourself of this communication.

    That'll get their attention.

    Question

    El Chu,
It was a person to person conversation with the freakin manager of the service area at Davis Chrysler Dodge in Logan, UT. Other thing is that I don't have the recall notice yet either.

    I have his card.

How can I prove to them that these conversations happened though? Classic case of he said, she said.

Now, Erica can back me up on this too though, she had a similar conversation with the dude.

I would love to have another shop do it, but with 800,000 plus Jeeps recalled, I have a feeling it will be only the dealership that will honor this.

There is one in Preston, ID I can try to go to though.

This guy is simply a douch at the local dealership.

WWMD to get there attention a bit better? Yes, they recalled, but that I have noticed something for a good year now.

Loosen the ball joint and go roll it five times.

Seriously, write a letter to -- or better yet, call -- the CEO. It seems like it shouldn't make a difference, but all the big companies I know of escalate problems that come through that way over those that come through normal channels.

Don't worry about proof in the sense of concrete, undisputable, videotape, etc. Create your proof in the form of the certified letter confirming that you made this request to that manager (use his name, attach photocopy of business card too), and confirming what his response was.

The point is to make a record. Enclose a copy of whatever you have that shows the recall -- a newspaper article is sufficient, or search NHTSA's website for the recall notice and print it out.

The point of a confirming letter is to create the record. If they do nothing to respond in writing (such as a letter back to you denying everything), then you're in good shape should anything bad happen (i.e. if the ball joint separates on your Jeep). I say this should get their attention because if they have half a clue, it's apparent that they are being placed on notice of your request that they fix a safety recall, they refuse to do so, and they are jeopardizing you.

(Damn I'm bored today.... really slow day stuck in a conference room in Walnut Creek....)

i agree w/splat. demand to get it fix asap. documentation and all that crap is fine in the long run, but if this is your primary car and you family rides in it you want them to be SAFE. there is no telling when the ball joint might fail.
    good luck.

Is there only one Jeep/Chrysler dealer in Utah? I have two in my home town. Given your VIN any Chrysler dealer can list the recall and warrenty info for your specific vehicle. It may not have happened yet. With 800,000 vehicles there's going to be a parts crunch anyway so an independant shop can't fix it anyway. Unless you want to use new defective parts since there's probably a design change.

You can always contact Chrysler customer service directly (by phone or e-mail).
If you have a problem & think that someone else is going to solve it for you then you have two problems.

One in this valley, one about 30 minutes north or one 1.25 hours south.

I live in the very northern Utah. Not a whole lot here compared to many places.

El Chu, Alpinedad, thanks for the advise. Going to demand a fix immediately. Letter to be drafted next week, just to make me feel better at least.

Splat, now you make me want to go four wheeling.

Weird! Chrysler already went through this with Dakota/Durango ball joint failure. Kind of fucked up if you ask me.

Loved my cherokee/libby when i had it (1yr ago).A lovable thing.

But what a miserable piece of shite it was,at the same time...

Had to replace stuff all the time (solenoids, ignition, exploding plugs, hinges, dead wiring, burnt computers etc..) but the thing that was the last straw was the clutch that had been acting weird. Smell of something burning when driving with it in the city. After 2 years of fighting with the dealership,i got in touch with our customer rights bureau and got a statement from them.Few exchanged letters and threatenging to sue them, the finally took it in.

After test driving in the parking lot for 2 minutes they decided there was nothing wrong with it...
Few more telephone calls and they gave up and opened up the clutch.
Just to realise that the clutch and clutch assembly(?) was wrecked.

As was the cardane axle. As was the lower part of the engine. As was some parts of the drivetrain...

The practically had to replace half of the undercarriage, those fuckers.

The same day i got the car back from the repair, i drove to a VW dealer and changed my car.

    AND.
All these two years the right side front end was acting clunky, wich they refused to check out too...

    R.I.P libby.

The floggings will continue until morale improves.

MY 2000 Wrangler was a money pit from day one. I have NEVER taken a vehicle in for warranty work more than once or twice. I had that jeep back for work over 16 times before the warranty crapped out. 3 trannys, a flywheel, and a shit load of other assorted "miniscule" complaints...
