Waterfall Couloir Trip Report - PICS

Stoysluttie and myself made an early morning assault on Big Baldy in Cache Valley to ski Waterfall Couloir. This couloir starts at an elevation of 8800 feet and drops about 2400 feet of total vert with angles from 34-54 degrees. The run ends in a nice technical, cliffy area with a waterfall. Our approach started at an evevation of about 5500 ft. and took about 5 hours, with a nice long breakfast break and some lollygagging.

A big thanks to Stoy for inviting me and showing me the way. Can't wait to do it again (Alex, post your pics here when/if you can).

Stoy charged up the mountain like a racehorse. The mountains across the valley are the Wellsvilles. Notice the smog filling the valley due to the inversion we've had for a few weeks.

    Nice cornice.

Do I look tired? Cause I am.

Making the final push to the top.

After a few turns on wind-crusted snow up top, the snow softened into a fast, crystalline powder that got us hooting and hollerin'.

A technical finish to the run, complete with a waterfall.

Looking back up at the last 1000 vert. There's some sweet lines in there.

Can't believe Stoy didn't turn that into a two story skip for you, 2P.

Just as he was crossing the creek that spills into the waterfall, I heard a big scraaaape and he flailed a little bit. For a second there I thought he was going to fall into that hole where the water drops into. That would have been ugly.

Yeah, kinda looks like you need a cheap cup of coffee from a gas station in Carson City.

Great report TP...looks like the south slopes are all but hammered by the inversion.

Yeah, tis true. We got a nice little storm today that put about 6 - 10 inches on the ground, so that should help fill things in a bit.

I'd have to say that it was a killer day! Nice pics too! Its always good to show a friend what lies just outside their house! I don't kow when I'll get those pics posted, someday. I didn't find the program on Canons site so we'll have to wait until the cd's come...and the way the snow is falling, don't know if i'll have any time!

I do have to correct you Two, as well as myself. First myself...Providence Couloir is the one we can see from the valley, not the one we came up next to.

The Second pic, Nice Cornice, is big baldy. The snow, last year, was there until June!

The Looking south towards Basin and Pow...Thats Willard and Ben Lomend.

Not so dramatic Baldy summit is the bland Millville summit.

Either I mislead you on those names or you were really tired and in need of some caffeine.

And up the hill like a racehorse....Nah, not that day but thanks for the compliment.

The next low av day and we're at it again!!!

Corrections noted. Thanks. I had a great time and I'm ready to go as soon as the snowpack stablizes. Give me a call!
