It's commemorating the legend of the Birkenbeiners (Norwegian for "birch legs") Who, if I can remember correctly, helped win a battle by using skis.
"There is a hell of a huge difference between skiing as a sport- or even as a lifestyle- and skiing as an industry"

Very close, Plakespear. They carried the then two-year-old King Haakonsen 40 miles over a mountain pass to thwart a coup attempt that aimed to kill the young Monarch and take control of the Norwegian throne.

The year is 1206; in Norway, the King has died leaving as his heir a young son, born three weeks after his death. But the Baglers want to kill the little prince and put in a prince of their own. On Christmas Eve, the Birkebeiners decide that the only way to save the little prince is to ski over the high mountains to safety in the north. And so they set out – but a great snowstorm comes up and the little group is slowed down; the Baglers are gaining on them when two of the Birkeneiners, the strongest skiers in the land, offer to take the prince on ahead. Reluctantly, his Mother agrees and they set off, breaking the trail, fighting against the wind, with only snow to eat - will they make it? (Birkebeiners were the fiercest, bravest warriors in Norway who went in to battle without any armor -only birchbark leggings - which is what their name means in Norwegian!) This historic event is commemorated in Norwegian communities around the world with a ski race around Christmas Day!
