    Car Maggots

My Lower ball joints on my 2000 S10 Balzer need to be replaced. The job is simply enough so I am doing it my self, however I am having trouble getting the drive shaft out so I can acces the lower Ball joint to remove and replace it.

The Chilton manual says, pull out the nut on the drive shaft. Done that.
Then mark the realationshipo between the outer CV joint the mounting plate and the hub, and remove the l bolts holding the mounting plate to the hub. Done that.

Next, hit the iner Tripod joint with a hammer and a block of wood until the snap ring releases and you can remove the drive shaft. Now WTF is the inner tripod joint???? Is it the cylindrical unit connected between the inner CV joint and the transfer case????

I dont exactly want to start pounding on a join unless I am absoluetly shure that is correct!

I have never worked on a Blazer before, I have owned a Supra, Pathfinder, and currently own a Jeep. I would really recommend buying an actual Chevy Service Manual, they are usually worth their weight in gold. I know most of the time I have been able to find the factory service manual by joining a forum for the specific car. Good luck.

BTW, if a snap ring is involved and you can get to it, don't force it off because you might do damage to the shaft, instead rent a pair of snap ring pliers or use needle nose pliers and spread the snap ring, it should come off easily after that. Later.l

I believe that you can buy the service manuals off the GM or Chevy website as well.

If you don't want to spend the money for the factory service manual at least go check out a haynes manual. In my experience the haynes manuals have much better illustrations and clearer instructions that chiltons.

I can picture this all in my mind. MBS's blazer on blocks in his driveway, parts everywhere, manuals strewn about, MBS lying on a skateboard with one arm under the car and one hand trying to hold a mug of beer--from the kegerator in his garage--level so it doesn't spill. Priceless.

Don't pm me. I'm pretty lazy and don't have any place to do any work, so I took the one I had to a shop to get the ball joints done.

I know that rtp has done them himself though. I'll try to get him to post something here. BobMC may be lurking too.

edit - I guess I should have read your post a little closer... So yes, based on your description, it sounds like you're going to be banging on the right thing. The joint you want is the one on the transfer case side.

edit, edit - The manual that I have says that 1999 and later have a snap ring on them, so probably want to take that off before wailing.

edit, edit, edit - I can't read very well. Who the hell bumps a week old advice thread? Oh.... That would be bossass.

A few beers made me realise that it would be easier to say fuck the manula nad jsut disconect the hub from the driveshaft. Easy. Now I jsut got to get the new joints in.
