    Moose-A-Rama 2006

Made the first of many trips up to Albion Basin the other day and saw a load of moose. Managed to shoot four at a time at one point--can you say...macon? Here's some of the keepers--will be adding to this as the season continues. Feel free to add your own.

I almost shat myself when taking this shot. I was ready to "make haste", if you will.

    Griz,

That last guy looked pissed. I have stumbled onto them while grouse hunting in the fall, really takes you're breath away. Great Pictures!

    Good Luck,

What is the best time of day to go up there and catch the moose in action? Great photos!

Morning or evening is best, but you're likely to see them any time of day to be honest. I've always had good luck seeing moose practically every time I go.

Best time is early morning around sunrise, or late afternoon/evening about 30 minutes beofre sunset. Most of these shots were taken around 8:00 PM, so you need a fast lens, like an f/2.8, for best results. 200mm minimum.

They don't like the heat. They usually just lay around in the shade during the day...until late summer/early fall when it cools off, then they might be up and about at anytime.

You can get fairly close to them at this time of year, but you should greatly increase the seperation distance in the fall, especially during the rut when they become signifacntly more aggresive, for obvious reasons.

Always have an escape route. If they start looking in your direction a lot, it means they want to walk that way, and you are probably in the path that they want to take, at which time it is a good idea to re-position yourself.

I've been shooting moose up up at Alta for years, never had a problem. Once, a big bulll walked past me at a distance of about three feet. He didn't even bat an eye.

This one is from a few years ago:

Where the fuck do they go in Winter? Those shots are amazing - I too have never seen more than 2 Bulls together, and these boys are HUGE.

I just love it when you add to My Pictures screen saver, consisting of photos by Grizzle, PowHo, Lynx and Astro.

Those are very nice shots. How close were you to the last one? Bet he heard your heart thumping.

I was that close once to two bulls. Had to slam the brakes on the CJ7 I was driving while land surveying years ago and I was wishing I had doors on the damn thing. Them guys are ginormous.

Glad you are still with us.

I think those moose where looking at you with the keen eye for the white guy. They are nearing the rut, and you might just have to do for them.
