    South Shore help, please.

I am recently back from tours in Iraq, afghanistan, bosnia, etc. and have decided to leave the military. Because of my credentials I was offered a position at Kirkwood. When I returned from my last deployment this past feb. I went to lake tahoe and had the chance to ski Heavenly and had a blast, my former co-worker from the service also now lives in reno, but my question is since k-wood is in south shore and alot farther to reno than north shore, where is a decent,(read:cheap, but do not care to sleep with a gun.) place to live? I have researched north shore alot but not south shore, so any tips would be great. I'm looking forward to meeting you all this winter, I am attempting something I have always wanted to do all those hot days in the sandbox and that is have 100 days on the hill. For a midwestern kid that is a big deal! (read: my only ski expierience outside of the midwest was that trip to heavenly) Thanks in advance for the advice.

Welcome to Tahoe, TGR, and back to the real world. PM huck4bucks. He has a place available in Incline Village for cheaper than you'll find anywhere else.

If you're stuck on living in south lake, I know of a guy who rents 2 nice 1BR's at the top of kingsbury for like $675. - If there's one available right now...

If you are gonna be working in Kirkwood ignore the above advice, it is well over an hour from Incline to the wood.

South lake has pretty reasonable rent.

the addy for the local online classifieds:

Just a suggestion. He doesn't really sound like anything is in stone yet - job or location wise.

Working at KW - better off living in Gardnerville or even Markleeville anyways. No 50/Y/89 amateur hour shit show to deal with on a powder day. But yeah, there are some decent deals to be had in SLT.

Is South Tahoe even a resonable place to live if working at K-Wood? AS in back and forth every day? I guess the area up 88 on the way there is Doable?

And hey I think your doing a cool thing. Just out of the Military is the perfect time to bum around and enjoy yourself. I hope you meet up with some good people and have a great time!. You may even settle in and find a home out here.

If you don't buy anything else get a SOLID relaible 4WD.

If Kirkwood is where your going to end up look for places in Meyers, Christmas Valley, and off N. Upper Truckee Rd. Five miles or so out of South Lake on the way to the hill.Living out there can save you tons of headaches on the weekends during the season. Should be able to find roomates and some pretty easy carpools in those areas.

Enjoy your newfound freedom, year and half to go for me and I'm done.

thats awesome ! i am certain many are jealous besides me.

i'd also look for anything close to kirkwood and not live in south lake if you will be working more than 3 days a week. if you map it online, it is about an hour each way; and the treck up from south lake can be tough if not impossible when the storms come thru.

i'd ask whoever you can find working at kirkwood right now what they suggest. and, i might also suggest asking heavenly, squaw and alpine for the same job; since youre not commited to kirkwood until november.
TGR forums cannot handle SkiCougar !

If you're out in Meyers or X-mas valley the drive isn't really that bad. I did that commute daily for a couple of seasons. If a big storm is expected and your job is critical they'll probably want you to spend the night up at the mountain anyway, so you wouldn't have to worry about the drive on those mornings. If you're only interested in skiing and working, living in Minden or Garnerville would be ok, but if you want to do some socializing living closer to South Lake would be better.

Wow, lots of really bad advice in this thread.

But to reiterate the good advice. Try to find a place in Xmas Valley or as close to it in Meyers as possible. The further out on 89 you are the shorter your commute. it isn't a bad drive. depending on how fast you drive you can do it in 30-35 minutes when it is dry and there is no traffic. when snow comes in, all bets are off.

check the classifieds, call some of the rental property managers, let them know you will be commuting to kirkwood and would like to live in Xmas valley if at all possible. Get out a map and you will have a better feel for the area.

Thanks for serving our country, dude. The war may be bullshit, but you guys are top notch. Welcome, and best of luck in Kirkweed.

Thanks again for the advice, correct me if I'm wrong but I thought Kwood was in south shore? Also to answer a few questions that popped up-

I was supposed to be working at NorthStar this summer, but guilted by the family not to leave so soon after coming home, so felt responsible to my familiy, I have enjoyed seeing my parents again, and being there for my two little brothers as they grow up (20 & 17 respectivly).

I will be working in the Security Department, which pays alot better than just being a liftie and all I really care about is skiing, so the pass is cool with me.

How far is the mentioned cities from kwood and reno:
    Minden
    Xmas Valley?
    Meyers
    Garnerville

    thanks guys

"Security" but you get to ski? Wait, are you going to be riding the lifts and busting people for smoking dope?

I will only be skiing when not working, and you will never catch me busting someone's balls for smokin a little bit of the good stuff.

Meyers is about 25 miles to Kwood. Christmas valley is a section of Meyers that's on the way to the hill. Could be wrong but that's about as close I think you could get without living in the stix. I'm swagging it a bit, but I think Minden / Gardnerville are in 45 to 50 mile range. On the Nevada side below the snow line.

Meyers - 26 mi. Same w/ Christmas Valley
Gardnerville - 34 mi. Minden and Gardnerville - pretty much the same place.
South Lake - 33 mi. and gaper traffic
Reno - 82 miles from KW via 88/395

Distances just as a reference point. Like lph said though, Time and distance (depending on delays/avy/road closures) are all subject to change pretty much whenever. On an average winter day, you're looking at at roughly 60 mins. (to be safe) from pretty much anywhere, provided all goes smoothly.

Meyers is a southern suburb of South Lake Tahoe. Christmas Valley isn't a town, it's a region that is also south of SLT. Google claims 26-27 miles to Kirkwood from Meyers but it's really about 30. 35+ from South Lake proper depending on where you start.

The problem isn't the distance, it's two mountain passes and skier traffic. It can take over an hour and a half in a bad storm.

If your hours are compatible with the employee shuttles from South Lake, that's the way to go. Driving both ways every day is a lot of gas money and wear/tear on your car, and you can blame the shuttle if traffic sucks and you're late.

Markleeville is a little mountain community that's about the same distance as Meyers. It'll be faster because there will be no traffic until you hit the 89 intersection. However, Markleeville is TINY. You have to really want small-town living to live there, especially in winter, when going three miles up Pioneer Trail to the supermarket can be an ordeal. I'd just live in Kirkwood and save myself the commute.

South Lake if you’re interested in furthering your alcoholism. Meyers if you want to keep it mellow and be closer to the ‘wood. Markleeville is you want to limit your social interactions to the retired Russians kickin’ it at the Hot Springs State Park. Live at Kirkweed if you’re interested in gravity bongs and pornography.
