Thread: 20 mm Fork-Mount Racks?

    20 mm Fork-Mount Racks?

I was looking at various rack manufactures (yakima, thule, rocky mounts) and while 9 mm QR-type fork mounts are plentiful, 20 mm ones seem to be non-existant. Rocky Mounts has a tray that fits 3.0 tires, but I doubt anyone will be using a QR front axle on a DH bike.

If you have a thru-axle fork, I assume you are forced to throw it in the back of your truck. I never was a fan of hitch- or trunk-mount racks, but maybe they've improved significantly to make them as good as roof racks.

    (Perhaps a getting a little tech-talky here):

I was lying awake one night thinking about the grievous injustice that 20 mm fork owners have to suffer while transporting their bikes, and I was thinking off a way to fabricate a 20 mm mount. However, since every system is different, and changing, I was thinking that the only goood way to this would be to clamp on the axle between the fork, since the dropouts aren't standard a la a quick release. Beyond that I haven't figured out a way to make a simple and reliable design, though.

Anyone ever have similar thoughts? Maybe some ideas about this? I was trying to come up with a design that could be done in a machine shop, although I don't have much reason to do it since I don't have a thru-axle fork. Or a car to mount it on, for that matter. But both of those things would be nice to get, so a guy can always dream.

It's been done. I had the same thoughts about welding some type of adapter so I went to the LBS to get regular dropout measurements and the guy said it would be easier to just buy the one he carries for $15 so I did. Next time I walk out to my truck, I'll get the name of the company. It's a tube the axle goes through and it has two "fake" dropouts welded on that fit in the rack. Seems to work ok.

I usually just transport my bike in the back of my pickup but if I go with other folks, this adapter allows it to fit in normal racks.

You could always get an upright mount like this.

Or, if your completely set on taking your front wheel off, these guys have what you need.

Fataxle = Much better idea than I had going.

Apparently I'm super-picky when it comes to racks. I've had a lot of bad/frustrating experiences with older racks, I guess. Ideally I would drive a pick-up, and attach some fork mounts to the bed somewhere. Plus you could get multiple ones and stagger them for QR vs. thru-axle.
