    My duty station overlooks Black's

And damn, for waist-high dribblers at 0730 I was amazed to see 40+ folks out!

    Wow.

Scripps pier was better looking and less crowded.

    See you out there!

I'm sure you got a nice view. You must be a guard for one of the mansions on the cliff.
    Couple of questions -
Can you break away and get down the cliff to surf if it's going off?
And will you be able to handle watching perfect black's and not being able to surf??
When i worked nights at mammoth it seemed like it would be torture to be a liftie and see all this sick powder and have to load chairs all day.

Not a mansion guard, no. A marine mammal geek training for a loooong research cruise at SWFSC.

I'll be bringing my surfboard from now on. I have 1.5 hour long lunch breaks and I'm done by 1700 every day. Whee!

(and since when are waist high dribblers "perfect Black's"?)

I'm sitting on the bluff in between the peak and the pier right now. Cool.

hop - waist high dribblers is far from perfect blacks. I'm talking when it gets good and big sets are coming from the canyon. I have seen it in all phases. (from fun head high to very scary DOH to TOH.)
You are stoked if you can get it without all the barns out there. keep the board handy and hopefully you will score some good semi-uncrowded sessions.

I'm off work now, you have access to a phone yet?

Or, pick a time to meet at Scripps and I'll see you there.

no phone yet, but I can try to dredge one up...

and my board is up at UCSD (and needs a coat of warm wax) but I could be convinced to head out this PM. I'm done by 1700 at SWFSC (right up the street from Scripps).

    Talking

    Haha! Check this:

"But there is something extremely odd -- you could even say queer -- about surfing a world-class break at which stark-naked, middle-age men often outnumber surfers. Black's has long been a celebrated nudist beach, existing in spite of a 1976 city-wide vote banning nudity here and at other city beaches."

CCS and I had a nice afternoon sesh at Scripps. It was great... warm water (Sayulita warm!!!!), no wetsuit, crystal clear water.... and about 300 people stretched as far down the lineup as you could see.

I'm torn between being so stoked that I'm in warm water w/o a wetsuit and disgusted that I'm battling all of southern CA for mush.

I guess further research is needed. See you out there at 0700, and then again at lunch and probably after work too.

Ok, the verdict is in. Sub-par windswell Blacks = the bomb, esp. in the 0530-0700 window and with the dolphin escort.

The north and south peak of Black's are south of the nude beach. The access trail from the glider port does empty out onto the nude beach portion but a few hundred yards to the south and you pass signs stating no nudity beyond this point. No nudity is allowed at the portion of beach known to surfers as Black's.

There is also an access road that the lifeguard uses to drive their trucks onto the beach. This access road goes down to the southern portion of south peak and has no parking. It is used mostly by UCSD students and locals.

BTW, stark-naked middle-age men do cruise the bottom of the glider port trail to the southern limit of the nude beach but even on a shitty day for surf the surfers way out number the stark-naked middle-age men that cruz this boundary line. On occassion I have even seen good looking naked women sunning themselves on that portion of the beach.

As for the crowd in the water, as the swells approach HH+ the crowd can get huge but is fairly spread out. Once the swell approaches DOH and the currents start dragging cross shore and the rips get nasty the crowd thins dramatically. DOH to DOH+ and the crowd is no longer a factor. At this point its more of a problem of dealing with the heavy currents, staying outta the rips and still having the strength to paddle into the waves. Don't get caught inside if you are lucky enough to actually get a wave. Black's has no real channel and will seriously punish you for milking a wave inside.
If you had a nickel for every nickel he has, you would have a lot of fuckin' nickels!
