Blast from the past, from a hill near you! Where are they now?

The other day when I was compiling stuff for the PM Chronology thread I found this old article. Where it came from I have no idea. Magazine, newspaper... beats me. - Anybody out there remember?

It had been 'bout 40 years since skiin' had started up here in the U.S. when it was published, and I think we must be pushin' another 35 years now. I really enjoyed the content, and some of the quotes are classic.

These ski bums are from all over the country, and appearantly my mom had met a few here and there (ref. the notes). It must have been a smaller world back then.

OBernhardfranz, take note, I think it was you asking about the "Jet turn" a few months back. The memory of that hippie doin' the "Superjet turn" was always hidin' out in the back of my mind after first seein' that pic as a young teenager. - and the quote: "...some buddies learned this stunt on mescaline: "You hear music and when you jump man, you stay up a long, long time."" - too classic! I'm bettin' there's a pair of Jetstix hidin' under those bluejeans.

So, Does anybody know/remember any of these old ski bums? Where are they now?

Well, enjoy & sorry 'bout the torn/missing corners.

Use Jet Stix. Turn form = "Jet turn". it was a turn that was around for a lil' while in the 70's.

That's how I learned to ski. And when you went straight up the side of a Volkswagen-sized mogul, you'd plant your pole on the top of it, rocket your skis up into the air (if you did it well, it was like a one-armed handstand on your pole) and pivot the turn on your pole. It was a different ski world then.

Geez, I like doing those turns in moguls, I must be an anachronism.

This came from a Sports Illustrated article I'm pretty sure. I remember Biebl's remarks since I was floating in similar spaces.

Thanks Buster. Thats what I was thinkin' after talkin' to the "head pack-rat" (mom) in the family the other day.
And circa must have been 1970 after various date/age calculations.

Don't have it any bigger...only photo of Airborne Eddie I could find.

I saw Wayne Wong at Alpine this year. He was skiing with a group that looked like they hired him for the day. He was wearing a fartbag.

Did you notice the MV2 skis? I still have a set in my rack. Sadly, they don't have Besser bindings, only Markers....

Winter of 1978-79 I started skiing again. I borrowed skis belonging to a friend's dad, old brown Rossignols with Besser plate bindings. They were from Michigan where those bindings were made. Wow, they worked but if you lost a ski in deep snow or steep terrain they were a royal pain to get back on.
In drove this drunken madman and stopped on a dime! Unfortunately the dime was in Mr. Rococo's pocket!

How could any respectable member of the (un-)official MV2 ski club help but not notice the sticks.

Didn't you read what I wrote?
