I need to ship a bike...

to Utah, where it will remain. I can either ship it FedEx Ground (5 days, $40), or take it with me on the airplane ($80). In either case, it will be boxed in a corrugated cardboard bicycle box. My bike shop tells me to ship it fedex, because the airlines will mess it up. On the other hand, while FedEx are professional, the box will be placed on 2 or 3 trucks en route to Park City. What do you think is a safer bet? This bike is 2 months old, and I don't want it to be ruined in transit.

I have never had a problem shipping bikes w/ fedex. Pack it well, wrap the tubes with gratuitous amounts of bubble wrap, double box it and you'll be just fine.

insure it out the ass and fedex it, hope that it gets wrecked on the way and buy two bikes with the insurance money. Supposidly you can't bike box now on some Airlines, so might want to look into that option before heading to the airport.

Have sent both ways atl to slc. The cheapest is to have your LBS ship it for you. Business to business ups or fed ex. Check with them about damage in transit and insurance. A friend packed it and shipped it and it was damaged it was a hassle to get the claim taken care of. The airline broke a hard case of miine a triall 3 case no bike damage and they replaced the case. My choice is have the local shop shipto the shop I use in UT.

Right now, I am thinking of shipping it to Coles. Of course, if I do, I will have to pay them to put it together. They're business people. I'm sure that they wouldn't just accept my bike, and then hold it for me, gratis, until I picked it up.

I have taken bikes with me on airplanes to Europe for free without a problem. Continental charges $80 for domestic shipping. What a racket!

FedEx IS better. I've done it several times that way.... FedEx or UPS, and no damage. But I've had my bike dented on airplanes... for twice the price!

Use Fed Ex. I shipped 2 bikes home from a race in Floriday once and they lost the damn things. They found them a few days later and I finally got them but it still sucked ass.
