    single speed freewheels...

As mentioned below, I'm loving my new single speed bike MTB.

    Question:

I've heard, but not found anything on the net, about a rear hub that has threads on both sides--- with two opposing freewheels. I've seen the ones where the one side engages the freewheel and the other side functions as a track hub. Great, but not real practical for MTB- IMHO.

Does anybody have experience with the "double sided freewheels", essentially allowing one to have a gear on both sides of the hub- then for longer climbs one simply (sort of) flips the rear wheel and places the chain on the other {larger tooth} cog???

The only "flip flop hubs I've seen are the previous- freewheel on one side and track on the other???

    Suggestions???

    Thanks in advance!

I think you might find what you are looking for here, under "new hubs":

You can get the Surly hub for $70 from webcyclery.com or $110 for a wheel. (I’ve had nothing by quality service from webcyclery and bought two SS wheels from them.)

Just in case you hadn't thought of it, you have to be using some sort of chain tensioner-- the chain length is obviously longer on one side.
    It's idomatic, beatch.

I run a flip flop hub (have an 18 and a 16). They both are bmx type freewheel cogs. I'll have to double check what kind of hub it is. It's a not a quick release though, so I wouldn't ever change during a ride (which takes care of the chain length issue). I don't use a chain tensioner, just adjust within the horizontal dropout.

If you have the loot, see if you can get a White Industries freewheel. They are killer.

No way. Single speeds are awesome because of their simplicity, so that bike is obviously twice as simple and 4 times more awesome.

Now that's just silly. Let's try to be just a little realistic here.

I found the slippery pig funny.

But I still haven't found what I'm looking for.

Double threaded rear hub with opposing freewheels on each side. From my research, I'm beginning to think it doesn't exist.

I don't want a track hub on one side- but a freewheel on both sides- with a cog so I can flip the wheel and get a different gear.

Good point from above... Chain Tension. I have track-style dropouts with chain tensioners. Lots of room/slack ensure I have the flexibilty to run two different cogs.
