    is it waterproof?

to clarify: is the whole setup waterproof, or just the camera?

like if i wanted to use it wakeboarding...

The helmet cam and cable are waterproof. The microphone is not but can be made waterproof quite easily or removed.

Your camcorder is not waterproof and would need to be placed in a watertight Pelican conversion case which we sell. And we also sell a neoprene lumbar harness/belt that the Pelican case securely attaches to. It's all at http://www.sportzshot.com and in stock.

So being new to the whole helmet cam thing .. how does this compare to what I've seen offered by Samsung and their Sports Camcorder line?

As Red Baron said... video quality is no where near as good. There are a few good reviews pointing out the pros and cons of the Samsung setup... you just have to search.

Thanks Red Baron... your insightful weather casts are surely missed here in Utah. Hope all is well in Chi-town.

    Thanks for the order DocChronic!

Just pulled the trigger. Thanks MM.

What kind of camcorder should I get to accompany my new helmet cam? Need something lightweight, durable and not too expensive. Guess its time to start shopping around. If anyone has suggestions feel free to voice them.
If you had a nickel for every nickel he has, you would have a lot of fuckin' nickels!

Thank you GheePup. No one really makes an "ideal" camcorder for helmet cam purposes anymore. I would snag one of these before you can't find them anymore. It's a model from a couple years ago but its tits for helmet cam use. Sony DCR-PC109 http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00...lance&n=502394

Also, I've been getting a lot of inquiries from self-proclaimed lurkers wanting to know if they can get it on the deal. So... ya sure, why not. I have plenty on hand. Deal absolutely ends on 7/20.

OK, need some guidance here. Said "fuck it, let's do it" and went to CostCo to buy the best camera that was on the compatibility list:

    http://www.sportzshot.com/compatibility.php

NONE at CostCo, NONE at Sam's Club, NONE at Best Buy, NONE at WalMart!

This leads me to the obvious question: is the analog AV interface this sportcam/helmet cam uses outmoded? Will this system only be good for a year or two before something new and better comes along?

I see the whole camcorder market moving toward hard disk recorders. As they become more sophisticated, why mess with tapes when you don't have to? I understand technology is always becoming outdated. However, I usually prefer to buy tech items BEFORE they become so.

    What say you, oh MonkeyMan?

    Good question!

First of all. I checked costco.com and no they didn't have any Sony's that have analog inputs. I also checked bestbuy.com and they have the DCR-HC96 which does have analog inputs.

So back to your question. Is the Sportzshot helmet cam going to be outdated in 2 years? Absolutely not. Of course we will move along with technology and provide the best options available. Keep in mind the system we offer today is designed to accomodate specific types of connectors as required by recording devices.

For example: most of the helmet cams offered out there come with the standard RCA connectors and will always require an adaptor cable unless the recorder has RCA jacks which is very rare these days. Right now, we offer both an RCA EZ-Connect cable and a 3.5mm AV connector cable. The 3.5mm connector is what Canon, JVC, and most camcorders now use. Sony used to the 3.5mm connector but now have went to a different type of connector.

Does that mean you can't use a Sony camcorder?
No, it just mean you have to use the adaptor cable that comes with the camcorder. So back to my point... as recorders require different types of connectors we will simply add another cable option to accomodate them. For instance, the next cable to come out is going to be the special Sony connector. So with the way we designed the cable setup all you have to do is buy the EZ-Connect cable you need and your helmet cam, battery pack, extension cables, mics will still be compatible. We also have other plans that will take it to the next level... sorry can't devulge any info on that just yet. And yes, your helmet cam you bought today will adapt.

We are also working on connectors for digital video recorders such as Archos, RCA, etc. And yes, you can still use them... you just need the adpator cable that came with the digital recorder.

Now about your question about our competitor. First of all, thanks for posting a link to my competitors site in my super maggot deal thread. But that's alright cause I'll tell you why I feel Sportzshot's package is a better deal and a better system.

    In a nutshell...
    Their camera is larger...
    Their camera isn't waterproof...
Their microphone has to be buried in the pack next to the recorder, Sportzshot's is detacheable and can be routed anywhere.
They don't have our goggle/helmet mount
Their package comes with a cheap battery tray (you supply the AA's), Sportzshot's comes standard with a rechargeable battery pack.
    Their's doesn't have a quick-disconnect near the helmet cam.
When you compare apples to apples Sportzhot's package is a much better deal... even at retail.

We also offer 1.5m, 3m, and 6m extensions so you can use it for an on-board camera or whatever.

So there you are Nugget... don't bash the helmet cam guys just because the camcorder guys keep changing the game. All we can do is adapt and that's what Sportzshot is setup to do. As soon as hard drive / Static recording matures a little more we will look into offering our own recording device. But it's hard to be competitive against the big camcorder manufacturers so now we just adapt to them.

Go fiind a used Sony DCR-PC109. Save yourself some money. That camcorder works well with helmet cams.

I'm all over this, but I am not sure what kind of cable I need. I have a Sony DCR-HC30 that has a LANC (not sure if that matters) and a "special" AV input. Should I get the AV or RCA cable???
    Thanks for putting this together.

    Powhntr,
You need the RCA cable (pvs-6cable-rca). At checkout you get the option of getting both for only $14.95 more. That saves you about $9 otherwise.

    Cheers

Wish I'd seen your response before I went out and bought the Canon Elura 100. Bought it at the storefront for $379 and got instant gratification. Go ahead and tell me the CCD is too small etc. It looks like it will work alright. It's on your compatibility list and has a separate mic input.

I'm ready to place my order. Please tell me exactly what adaptor cable I need to buy to make sure my new camcorder works with your system. I'll 'tard it up if I go solo. I look forward to getting the gear and can't wait to use it. Thanks!

Hey Nugget... sorry for the grief, I was a little cranky earlier. It's all good.

FYI - Some of the other sites like to bash the competition pretty good. I thinks it's in bad taste. I hope nobody thinks I was bashing the other guy... I was just stating my honest opinion based soley on comparable features.

My cam was sitting on my porch yesterday. The thing is sweet and much smaller than I expected. Its tiny and will work quite well on my goggle strap for tree/pow days. I hate helmets but I suppose I am gonna have to get a helmet for hucking footage. Bring on the snow!

Thanks MM for the great deal and service. I was informed that the AV cable has some issues but they are sending me a replacement that fixes the problem. Thank you.

If you are thinking about getting one you better do it now because this is a smoking deal and it ends tomorrow. I'm off now to find a camcorder. Can't wait to do my first helmet cam TR.

    Thanks again MM.

For the Canon Elura 100 you can connect it directly with the PVS-6CABLE-AV.

i beg to differ on the samsung, i picked it up about a month ago, and really like it, the video quality is decent, although it doesn't have as good res as this one does. don't mean to thread-jack but can send out a video if anyone wants... the main reason i like it is that it is compact and lightweight. i do wish that the battery life was better.

Got a Samsung too. Yup, it's nice, but it's not a replacement for a real camera and its battery life sucks
