Does cell phone text messaging work in LL & the Chilean ski resorts?

Anybody know if Cingular or T-Mobile text messaging works from the US to the SA ski resorts and also if it costs anything extra if I have an unlimited US plan?

A friend of mine said it does if your phone is GSM, but you have to call your provider beforehand and let them know you're going. Not sure about the cost.

    Edit: he is on Cingular

Get your phone unlocked or buy a cheapo unlocked 4band and buy a local prepaid SIM = mucho cheaper for anyreasonable use. Also offers more reliable service.

Are you sending text messages to SA or vice versa?

FYI, Titty-mobile int'l text messages is about 35 cents a pop, if you use it while overseas. If you're in the US and send an int'l text message then it's 15 cents a pop.

Sending and receiving. I'll need to do a few but endless will sending hundreds if this works and is included in his unlimited plan.

I've had problems with Cingular/At&T text and voice messages down there before. messages duplicated together with charges

It always seemed to be pot luck which provider's signal you'd get even in the same location which may have had something to do with it.
