    Uintas in July?

    So... I've searched the archives and found only a smidgen of information, so here we go:

    If I were to head up to the Uintas in 2 weeks, and wanted to get some skiing in without hiking for more than, say, 4 hours to the base of the snow, where should I go? Also, is there anything left up there of reasonable size?

    Alternately, is there anything along I-80 west from SLC in Nevada (not too far in) that would have snow? Basically, I have a friend driving through en-route to CA and he really, really, really wants me to take him skiing but I don't know where to go at this point with everything melting so quickly.

    Ruby moutains. 45 Minutes south of I-80 near Elko, NV. Not sure on access, or road conditions. Road should be open to the top parking area by now I'd think. Haven't been out that way in over a month, but there should be some snow still within hikeable distances. If not, it's a really beatiful detour (think Yosemite style glacier valley, but a little smaller, with no crowds).

    Melts fast up there this time of year. We went up the road yesterday for a hike and there wasn't much left on the West side of the range. I'm sure you can find a few ice cubes if you try. Bring your DEET. I bet there's some snow on the N. side of Bald/Reids Peaks:

    There may be more snow and better access in the Wasatch. There's always the Timp snowfield.

    Uintas= mosquitos
    Ruby= sick

    Skied a pretty big line up in the rubies (lamoile canyon) about 5-6 weeks ago. stayed in Elko which is a whole nother story, but the road was open to almost the very top- it will be open now for sure. The coverage was ill when we were there, but without a doubt the snow must be mostly gone by now. Even if the snow is gone, the canyon is sick- think little cottonwood w/o ski areas.- good recreating.

    Or go ski main chute in alta via the tram. All you'll be alse to ski is the chute itself and maybe some of ballroom, the snow is going fast. I guess it just depends on how desperate your friend is to ski

    You might possibly be one of the few nutbags I've heard of skinning the approach into the rubies

    I was just there last weekend and there are some great snow patches left. Bald mountain pass and some others should allow for great turns.

    I'll try and post some pics

    Ruby mountains are certainly a possibility, and if you have photos around bald mountain pass, SE, that would be great.

    Also, anyone have info on the tony grove area snow coverage wise? I'm guessing it's mostly gone now too...
