Headed out for the nice long weekend on Saturday, July 1st. What a way to start out the new month. Headed right through Yosemite and did a quick short hike up to Bridalveil Falls. Drove through the mobs of people in Yosemite and headed over Tioga Pass. Saddlebag Lake was still closed, so we just continued on to Mammoth. Reached Mammoth Saturday evening to start the adventures.

Sunday we did the hike up to Crystal Lake. Still lots of snow, so bushwacking was in store for the hike. The outlet of Crystal Lake was still frozen over with about 2 feet of snow on top. 1 small “iceburg” was near the logs at the outlet. Hiked around the entire lake, across a couple snow fields. There were a few sections of snow up against rocks that there was still close to 7 feet of snow.

Did a nice leisurely bike ride in the late afternoon on Sunday. Had to hit up the Village Sunday night as that was going to be the fireworks show since Crowley Lake got cancelled.

Monday, headed down into Reds Meadow for a hike to Rainbow Falls. It was just beautiful.

Tuesday, July 4th, 2006, Mammoth Mountain Closing Day unfortunately, but what a great morning out riding on the snow. Ran into some Mammoth Forum members and did lots of laps down Cornice and Climax. Broadway wasn’t very good, but surprisingly Fascination was still pretty decent considering. Tuesday afternoon, went out on Lake Mary for some kayaking. It was so beautiful and peaceful watching as the afternoon thunderstorms brewed over the Sierra Crest and over the Minarets as we floated around the lake. The impromptu “Block Party” was actually a hit in front of Base Case in the evening. The band rocked and all had a great time.

Wednesday came the real adventure, hiking up out of Twin Lakes right through Hole In The Wall. The face right up through the Hole was steep and loose, but slowly in the “non-disturbing of nature” way hike right through the hole and up onto the top of that section of rock. Hiked back down the back on the trail back out to Lake Mary Road, then down to Twin Falls, right down the face of the falls. No creatures were injured during this rock climbing hike, including myself. Afternoon a great lunch, then off to bike Uptown/Downtown (not quite the whole trail, like ½ of it).

Wednesday evening, camera playing time, the bright moon and some constellations were just begging to be photographed. Unfortunately had to head closer and back to the “real” world Thursday. But back to Mammoth in 2 weeks for more adventurous summer fun.

I guess the snowboards will have to get lonely for a relatively small amount of time (4 months). Live long, November 9, 2006, Mammoth Mountain opening day for “SNOW”!!!!!!
