    mac/iTunes ??? (again)

I'm trying to make space on my Mac HD so I dumped the big space taker-upper (my iTunes library) onto an external harddrive (actually two for redundancy's sake)
How do I get iTunes to recognize them as the source library instead of the internal HD? Everything I've tried keeps on re-importing instead of just reading...

    Did you try this?
    Go to Edit>Preferences>Advanced>General
Then uncheck the box entitled "Copy files to iTunes Music folder when adding to library"

    yeps, tried that.

I figured it out... apparently iTunes needs to have a some sort of path from the program to the external HD. If you drag and drop from the external HD to the library it seems to work, even though the source is still the Mac HD in the preferences (???). Now when the HD isn't connected I can't play anything but the song names are still there, and I still have all the space I cleared out, which is what I was hoping for. The next step is dealing with my iPod now. Whee.

me + computers = miracle anything works at all.

Life should NOT be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in an attractive and well preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways, chocolate in one hand, martini in the other, body thoroughly used up, totally worn out and screaming "WOO HOO what a ride!"
