Our local ski hill, the ski hill where I, and countless other Bow Valley residents learned to ski and spent many weekends of their childhood, is facing a tough time. According to Parks Canada estimates ski hills in the National Park need to see at least 125000 skier visits per year to avoid insolvancy but Norquay only sees a maximum of 100000 skier visits per year. To increase visits they are proposing a summer usage scheme for sightseeing and an Interpretive center which will be in line with Parks Canada Agency’s mandate. This mandate includes three key elements or pillars: protection, education and facilitating memorable visitor experiences.
Under their lease agreement with Parks they are legally allowed to summer usage on the slopes but Parks and the environmental lobby are actively trying to block this. Please help us out by signing up as a friend of Norquay to keep our community ski hill alive.
