    Question August Alaska JONG Question

So looking at Kellie's sweet TR, I suddenly had the realization that there's still snow in Alaska. Duh.

And then I realized, we're going to be in Alaska in August, roughly the 12th through the 19th.

And then I said to myself, self, perhaps there'd be a way that you might be able to take the family skiing when you're up there? You know, just to confirm to AlpineMom that you're unhealthily obsessed?

How should I answer myself, bearing in mind that three-fifths of the family is under 10 years old?

That is a tall order for a group of that age at that time. I don't think there is anything for you guys. By that time of year you have to really hike for it, but I am sure if anyone else knows of anything else they will chime in. If money is no object you can probably get a flight to some skiing.

    Where are you going?

I lived near Talkeetna one August, and I think I remember that summer that K2 avation had some program for dropping ski tourers off on the glacier, near the base of Denali. Might try giving them a call.

All we know for sure is that we'll be at a remembrance for my wife's grandmother up in Rocky Lake, and we'll probably base out of her old house on Denali Street in Anchorage. Beyond that, we haven't really made plans yet.

Sadly, money is an object. On the other hand, if you go heliskiing at age 6, isn't life pretty much downhill from there (pun intended)?

You could give a go at the Lane Glacier. If the skiing isn't good you will still get in a beautiful hike. Possibly the Milk as well, or the Raven but I'm betting all of them will be a bit "skinny".

In other news the silvers should really be picking up about that time in Seward...

Yeah, I suspect we'll spend a couple of days fishing on the Deshka.

Make em' hike. It's what I'd do .

Unless the wife and kiddies are really interested, may be best to let the skiing thoughts slide. It'll be August.

On a side note, took my family to the mtns for Father's Day and there's a family 6-8 HUGE people walking around the snow next to the drive (still 3-5 ft around the house). As we pull in the drive, I mistakenly say aloud "who are the Fatterson's?" which my 5 & 7 yr old pick up on immediately and bust out laughing- my wife was less amused.

My father had seen them asking for directions "to the snow" and told them if they didn't want to drive far there was a bit in the Alpental valley. Turns out it was a family from Florida who had been on an Alaskan Cruise and somehow NEVER SAW ANY SNOW.

Guess there's no snow left in Alaska.

And since Sunday my kids keep referring to "The Fatterson's" when they see someone large.
Move upside and let the man go through...

Kids will be. Wife thinks she's indulging me enough with Fourth of July in Mammoth.

    Oh well.
