How's the snow holding up there? Lots of sunny days and no snow. Is it pretty much spring conditions? Oh and pray to Ullr for snow before next weekend please.
I was at the 'weed Thursday and Friday and the conditions were decent. Not much of the hill gets a direct hit from the sun this time of year, so it's holding up OK. Made it to Squaw Saturday and the conditions were worse. They even shut a few runs down because of the poor surface. Ended up (as usual) spending the majority of the day in the terrain parks. Someone should tell Squaw that they have some work to do on the big pipe. Kirkwood's is much larger and better right now....
Conditions were less than par, but yes I agree they were still decent. Nevertheless, it *really* needs to snow again. I'm even thinking of .....gasp!..... skipping out on next weekend if it doesn't snow before then!! After all, which sounds better...skiing on groomers again and risking crashing on hardpack with a less than perfect knee, or going to a party in the bay area with a bunch of hot Aussies?
But if it snows towards the end of this week, I'm definitely going to be at K-wood.
Edit: Oooohhh!!! NWS website for S. Lake Tahoe:
Friday night. Mostly cloudy with a chance of snow showers. Lows 16 to 26.
Was at KW Saturday and found good off piste conditions....you just gotta follow-up the sun around to get corn/edgeable stuff. Morning Palisades/maybe Eagle....and um, some other stuff around Eagle ....After 12:30 PM, start hitting up Lookout Vista.
Call me crazy, but I'm actually enjoying hucking to these semi-hardpack conditions....no worries of buried rocks lurking beneath LZ's
For the next week would stay away from any lower elevation resorts. Skied KW Sunday and Monday. No snow for 2 weeks has built up lots of beautiful moguls all over. From midday into the afternoon easily the best bump skiing thus far this season. On days with typical 40s temps like Monday would stay away from areas that have recieved too much sun like Eagle Bowl as they now have a deeply frozen layer that will not thaw out much even by midday. Some of the shadowed steep open areas below the ridgeline like the top of The Wall have developed a smooth hard surface which is difficult to edge.
Other steep north facing areas that never get sun this time of year like Thunder Saddle below will have nice edgeable lose snow on all usual skier tracked lines.
In this image Shaffer's and Cliff Chutes were fine even early in the morning while parts of Lost Cabin that face a bit more sun were lousy. Despite settling a couple feet from 2 weeks ago, 11 to 16 foot base does a lot for making for great skiing.
