    How's this for LAME?

I have a 19 year old cat named Lola. I got her when I got my first appartment. Super chill cat that survived my many youthful indiscretions, roommates, kids, and outlived and dealt with a host of various dogs.

She has been declining over the last couple of months and I came to the conclusion that it is finally time to put her down after a good long (if not miraculous) run. I had an appointment for 8:30 this morning to put her down.

Last nightat about 8:00, our neighbors dog grabbed her off my doorstep, broke her neck and GUTTED her.

She was 12 hours away from a dignified peaceful end and this is how it ends after 19 years. I can't even begin to tell you how pissed I am.

    LAME.

The dog has growled at my kids in our own driveway. Last night I walked the neighbor to the property line and showed her where the dog would be shot if he crossed it.

I am hoping that you are as adamant about your statement as you sounded. If that dog has threatened the kids and gutted your cat, make sure you follow through with blowing it to hell and beyond if it so much as steps one foot in your curtilage. I love animals but.....

Sorry to hear about your pet Owen.

Too bad you couldn't rent a Bengal tiger for a day. That would be such poetic justice.

That sucks ONS. It'd be shitty to have to kill the dog but I'd do the same in your situation.

That is the worst story I've ever heard.

Truly. Makes me want to cry. RIP Lola. God, her poor, terrifying, horrible, last moments. Poor thing

Man Owens I'm so sorry for your loss. I have 3 cats. I would have been lost the last year without my boys. I'm sorry how your girl passed to the other side. But please trust me on this. She does remember you and you will see her again on the other side. We are all God's greatures and your love for her is not forgotten.

I suspect many of us have lost a beloved pet - though in much less traumatic ways - and grieve over the loss of our companion. I still miss two fabulous cats that are long dead.

I'm very sorry about Lola, but think of other 6934 days worth of good memories.

    Unhappy

Owens, I'm really sorry to hear about this man. But please don't focus on the last minute of her life. From the way you speak of her, she was a really lucky cat. You were really good to her. It's terrible to hear that this is how it had to end though, it is very unfair.

As for your neighbors, were they at least horrified and apologetic? I can't imagine what I would do if my pet maimed another pet, I would be absolutely sick about it. What kind of dog is it? I am glad you have made your position clear to them.

    Take care,

Sorry again for your loss. RIP Lola. At least up until yesterday she had a great life!

That is very sad ONS I am sorry to hear that.

It would be a shame to have to shoot the dog, but after its agressivness toward your children and pet, if you have shoot the dog the sole responsiblity for the dogs demise will be its owner, your neighbor, for failing to control and train his animal.

I'm with you on that. But, she needs to keep her dog under control and on her property. I've talked to her several times about the dog. He's been in our yard growling at the kids, and one day wouldn't let my mother in law out of her car in our driveway. He was snarling, baring his teth, and kept her pinned in the car until I got home an hour later. The dog keeps coming over. He'll go into our garage when the door is open and rip through our trash.

The neighbor is mortified over what happened, but at the same time doesn't control her dog. I had to put it in concrete terms for her. I wouldn't let the dog threaten my kids any more than I would let a bear or a person fuck with my kids.

My son is 20 months old and my daughter is seven. It's a pretty big yellow lab and could do some serious damage to a kid.

Therefore, after numerous warnings, a dead pet and finally a plain explanation of how it will go if he comes around my house or family anymore, the dog will get shot if I see him on our property. We each have two acre lots. It takes some doing for the dog to come to my house. She has plenty of room on her lot for her dog. All she has to do is control it. If she can't control it, she shouldn't own it.

Here's a pic of the cat taken a week ago...

I'm so horrified by this story, I can't stop thinking about it, and told everyone tonight. Every person I told (I started with "I heard the worst cat story tonight..."), cried.

Having said that, Lola was a happy girl for 19 years, and like TJ said above, will meet you again...

Yeah, 2 acre lots is significantly different than the average neighbor dog wandering 50 feet from the front door and onto your driveway. Even if it was closer, they still have a responsibility to keep it off your property if it is in any way threatening your family. The fact that it killed one of your pets is ridiculous - and they need to keep it locked up/leashed at all times. It's bullshit that they couldn't be responsible enough to keep it under control before this happened. I'd report it to animal control right now, actually. And if it ends up back on your property, growling at your family - whatever you decide to do, I think is justified.

My aunt had a dog that was just... deranged. I hadn't ever met an animal that I really thought should just be put down before (without being old or ill) - that was just beyond help/retraining/etc. But that thing needed a bullet in the head. As fate had it, she took it to a dog park and another dog bit it and it died of an infection. I never thought it would be on the receiving end, but I guess karma got it back after it drew blood repeatedly on everyone in our family. Maybe it'll get what it deserves on its own. At least you know what it's capable of now and can be ready if it comes back.

And I'm very sorry about Lola (made me cry too). But it sounds like she lived a long, good life, overall. Certainly she deserved a better end, but maybe her sacrifice led to raising a big red flag and the future safety of your children.

Suck-tastic. Sorry to hear about your cat. Our neighbors dog hopped our fence and attacked our puppy last week, and then the wife nearly got torn up pulling them apart. We laid down the ultimatum with the neighbors and told them if we saw the dog off their property we were calling animal control (we're in city limits so we have that option) We followed up with animal control so they knew what was going on and they said that the dog has bitten a kid before (but the parents didn't file a complaint, so they couldn't do anything) and killed a cat, and to take pictures and call if we see it out and they'll take care of it. If it comes on my land again I'm bear spraying it and calling it in.

That blows, Owens. As far as shooting the dog, you do what you gotta do. I wouldn't allow a dog to harass my family either.

That does suck, ONS. Sorry to hear about it.

Though I'm uncomfortable with the idea of shooting your neighbor's dog, I'm not in your shoes. In the right circumstances, it may be necessary.

I'm not at all troubled, however, by feeding large quantities of refried beans to unpleasant neighborhood dogs. Did that a couple times when I lived in Las VeGAS. I figure it's most likely not the dog's fault that the dog is the way it is, it's the owner's fault for how they raised the dog. So I let the dog emissions take care of the owner for me.

And recognition must be given to commonlaw for what has to be the first use of the term "curtlilage" on TGR.
