    5 spot vs 575

So I have decided that it is time to get rid of my Giant carbon MCM Team and move into the realm of XC full suspension. Basically I am finding myself doing longer rides these days and not really all that interested in racing. So, do I go Yeti 575 ($400 cheaper and IMO uglier) or Turner 5 Spot? Compare / Contrast and help me decide.

you can't go wrong either way.

I love my 575, turner's seem too expensive for comparison. There is some guy online selling awesome 575 builds for less than $2200. Check the yeti forum at mtbr.com, it's all the buzz over there.

I got mine used (in great shape, but some drivetrain issues) for less than $1500, check ebay, there's a bunch of 'em on there right now.

I hate to sound like a tgr dweeb, but use the search function, as there are tons of posts on this same topic, and have you considered the titus motolite?

There are so many sick bikes in this range right now...

Bang for your buck - Giant Reign
Looks like a hummer handles like a porche - Rocky Mountain Slayer
Build it up for anything from light freeride to xc epics - 575
    just sick - intense 5 point 5

those are the bikes I test rode this spring, I think I'm going to get either a slayer or a 575

    Get the Slayer, grskier

575 is totally sick, climbs like a monkey and DH's like a machine, but NOT FOR DROPS, save under 2-3 feet. Slayer is all those things, but can handle a good bit more abuse. 575 is a race bike with ~6 inches. The Slayer is a Freeride bike scaled down to pedal well on trails.

And a Turner anything? Sweet shit. If you're a lawyer. Not worth the tag unless you really want a super gucci version of a fairly basic linkage design. But if you do, get a 6 pack. 6" is the new 90mm waist

In my (limited) experience, Darksides advice was right on. The 575 does feel like a race bike with almost 6" of travel, and the Slayer does feel way more like a "freeride" bike.

I feel so gay using the term 'freeride'. Someone kick me in the balls, please.

Being the proud owner of a 5-Spot, I'm a little biased. But frankly, I can't imagine riding a better trail bike.

I absolutely love my 575. Finally getting used to all of that suspension, but bombed down an eight mile shuttle run today and it was PURE GLORY

I rode a 575 and 5 spot last year and went with the spot. The main reason I went with the spot is the geometry fit me like a glove. It's been a year or so but here's what I recall -

    Uphill:
I found the spot climbed better (less bob) than the 575 but that would be expected since you are comparing a single pivot (575) to a Horst (spot) and slightly more (.75") travel.

    Downhill:
The 575 felt a little plusher. I also noticed a little more frame flex in the 575 vs. the spot, but I am 185lbs (almost 200# with a full camelback, tools, etc.) and ride hard. I don't think lighter riders would notice the flex at all. Didn't notice much brake jack in either one. Coming from using my SC Bullit (tons of brake jack) as my XC rig I was pleasantly surprised.

Bottom line - As was mentioned above, you can't go wrong either way.

5 spot! It is possible to build one up for about the same price as the 575 (a little more). Found a new 5 spot frame for $1500 and got the 575 enduro kit for 900 turned out to be a great way to go. You just have to look around and be a little patient. The 5 spot lacks the brake jack issues of the 575 which makes it a better descender IMO. Seems to climb great too.

While presumably there will be brake jack on the 575 because of its single pivot, I haven't really noticed it too bad.

I think the consensus is correct in that you cannot go wrong with either bike.

they are both fantastic bikes, as are some of the others mentioned

it all depends on fit, budget, and personal preference.

you can't go wrong either way.

which do you like more? get that one.

Titus is not the same as Turner. Though both are nice.

And a Turner would be sweet, it was just out of my budget when I bought my 575.

Sigh, I know you guys joke about Turners a lot; but how many of you have actually ridden one? Before I bought my Spot, I demoed a 5" Coiler for several days. Both bikes are 5x5 and share the same "basic linkage design," but the way they rode was COMPLETELY different. There's more to building a bike than "basic linkage design." My Spot smokes that Coiler up and down.

Yeah, but is your 5-spot the older horst-link design? It is still probably not fair to say the new Turners are just overpriced Konas, but the consumer is certainly not paying for Turner to use the FSR patent anymore. Prices should have dropped.

Titus kind of randomly got thrown into the fray here, and their Moto-lite shouldn't be overlooked. Only 5", but you get the horst-link for a similar pricepoint as the 575 frame (~$1400).

Gettin' a little testy there? Guess I would too if I spent 5 grand on a Remedy. And of course a 30lb bike is gonna smoke a 38lb bike. Happens every time.

Cute that you call it "Spot." That cost extra?

My Coiler flys both ways. Cost me 1100 duckets. Sometimes it dumps me on my face though. Bet Spot would never let you down like that.

No really, I'm not hatin' on your bike. It's freakin' trick, dude! Gotta expect a little shit from the cowpokes when you ride up on a pretty horse like that.

Yeah but that doesn't go for all pretty horses - the Turner dorks get nothing but slagged, while I get nothing but RESPECT for my Foes

5 grand? I don't know what lbs you deal with, but I guess you like getting raped in the ass.

Also, the new 6" Coiler might be 38 pounds but the old 5" one I rode didn't seem that heavy.

Don't get me wrong, Kona builds burly bikes. Some might say too burly. The old Coiler just wasn't for me.

Thanks for all the great input guys. It just makes my decision that much harder... but sounds like it is a good decision to have. So Go Ride now has both a 5 spot and a 575 built for demoing and I will be riding the 5 spot tomm. Sweet thing is the demos will go towards my purchase. SO I will let my legs make the final decision. I have to say I am leaning towards the 5 spot but it could be just b/c I think the 575 is ugly.

I just got a complete Slayer 50 for $1100! It's pretty stock but it's a decent build and the price was right. All the other used 5" fullies I was looking at were at least $500 more and after Darksides rave reviews I can't wait to get the thing in the mail.
