    These pool shots are self-portraits.

That's bad ass, very nice shot. I recently sold my trusty Nikon 35mm 8008s and I've been seriously thinking about a dslr. This thread just got me interested in the 30d..

I've always wanted to get/see a shot of a solid 8/9 ball break with the cue in the air, right at or just after impact; maybe just a couple inches and a shutter speed *just* slow enough to give the cue ball a little motion. I think a good, solid hit from the kitchen into a tight rack would probably do it.

Again, very nice.. I'm gonna go google the 30d now..

The first and last shots in the baptism are wieners, IMHO. The rest are very nice snapshots, but are not your best work.

Your eye and technical skillz are getting really good Chad. I'm proud of you and your dedication to the art.

Thanks Tip...that was really tough to shoot. I was shooting ISO 1250 @ f/3.5 tyring to keep my shutter speeds high enough fightng with the light in the church. I was glad to be behind the lens as it hid my anger at being repeatedly called satan by the priest (I'm teh jew and anyone not accepting Christ is the devil). Good times...good times.

A few from this week...doing the whole "fall" thang.

wow, I don't know how I missed this thread. Really nice photos. I think the first pool self portrait is my favorite. Do you even take your camera skiing with you?

Thanks, the last time I skied (2/23/2005) I didn't even have a camera. Hopefully I'll be shooting on snow this winter.

It actually has quite a nice effect in the first photo - it emphasises the slope of the image.

    This thread wins.

I have to ask on this one. Is there a timer in your hand or did you just set a timer and get lucky on catching the cue ball pretty much EXACTLY before impact......leaving the other ball nice and static? Impressive.....especially with the slow shutter speed.

This was a trip. I rented a table at a local pool hall and set up my tripod. After a few shots to get the angle I wanted I then worked on shutter speed. Once I was getting the right amount of blur I went to work, literally. I wanted to be shooting the 13 into the corner with the 13 facing the lens so every attmept required positioning the pool balls. I had a remote shutter that I could lock down. With the camera in 3fps burst mode it will fire off frames at that rate until the buffer is full. So, I'd lock the shutter open and run around the table trying to set up and sink the shot before the buffer ran out. Once the buffer is full the frame rate drops dramatically which reduces the odds of getting a useable capture. I did this for about an hour taking over 300 frames. The looks I was getting were priceless though.

How many times did you miss the pocket?

Thanks for the info. That one had me thinking there was a bit of work behind it.

    I'd consider 300 frames "work"

Nice, C - a little tip: A piece of foam core (White board) next to the lens would have kicked a little light back onto the table, enough to make the 13 "pop" a little by just softening that shadowline a tad...

You could also use one of these:

I'm not that industrious tip! Though it would be nice to have that for pics like these...
