Housing & work available in Truckee

    Housing:

We're searching for one housemate in Truckee, California... we have one bedroom available in a 4-bedroom, 2.5-bath, 3-level A-frame in a great location. Housemates are myself and 2 other professionals in our early 30s, with a mix of interests ranging from outdoor mountain sports to movies to Burning Man and other eclectic creative stuff like that. Good people, and it's a great house. email me (see below) for details.

    Work:

The Backcountry needs to hire one or two additional salespeople. If you've worked for an outdoor retail business before and would like to live and work in Truckee or Tahoe City, please get in touch. You'd be surprised how few local applicants we get, or how many far-away applicants never get around to coming in for an interview. If you actually care about making a small, independent, customer service oriented shop work and work well, so that it is equally a joy to its staff and its customers, this is one of the best places on the west coast to make that happen right now. It's a very teamwork-oriented shop with an active, involved management and an atmosphere that's always productive/constructive, sometimes hilarious, sometimes stressful, and always moving forward.

Send me a message, I'll be happy to answer any questions.

Interesting offer. Looks like you are talking about inside sales? I only do outside sales, strike one. And so I would live with my boss? Serious strike two. And I've got a good thing going here, so I guess I am out. Sounds like a good spot for someone though. Hope I get the chance to spend some serious time in Tahoe soon.

And holy shit check out this TR from the forum over there.

Sounds like a great opportunity for the right person.

I had no idea Eric O. and Telegasm are the same person. I've been reading those TRs over there - pretty insane stuff.

Just out of curiousity has there ever been an issue between thebackcountry.net and backcountry.com as far as trademarks, etc.? Just wondering because the names are so similar.

The job is retail sales, outdoor gear. Our strongest department in the summer is full suspension mountain bikes (Intense, Kona, Marin, Jamis) and we're working on building up a climbing and backpacking/camping department. In the winter it's mainly a backcountry skiing & splitboarding shop. I should mention that we're surrounded with good food, killer singletrack, and 30 minutes to excellent backcountry powder laps.

Not really looking to find one & the same person for the job and for the room for rent. I could live with a coworker if it worked out just right, but more likely we're talking about two separate people here. I need a housemate and our shop needs people, and it's only a coincidence that I'm posting about both at once.

It's worse than that... there's also Backcountrystore.com, and several stores called Backcountry Bicycles or Backcountry Gear in various other towns across the states. Sometimes I call up a manufacturer and they're not sure which "Backcountry" I'm calling from.

But no, no legal issues so far. Apparently our store predates their domain name and my boss missed out on the domain name by a couple of days or something, I'm not sure. Oh well.

Wow, sounds like an awesome environment with some cool people. [Unfortunately, the commute from Gardnerville to Truckee would KILL me,] but it certainly sounds like an awesome opportunity for the right person. Props to you for offering this out to the collective. ++++++ Good luck in your search.

The truck: aw, it's only a leetle pick-em-up truck! The kid's-eye-view photo does make it look like the fabled Canyonero, though.

The job: starts anytime or as soon as possible. But there's a good chance we'll need someone later, too. Email or PM me anytime if you're interested. It's a great place to work if you've got some history selling bikes, backcountry ski gear, climbing gear, etc.

The room for rent: $550/month. It's more than I've been paying previously in Mammoth and in Tahoe, but the place is more worth it per dollar than I've ever seen. Two great decks, sunshine, a very green neighborhood with no traffic, we're about 1000 yards away from the start of Fire Road 06 which connects you to every bikeable or hikeable trail between Truckee and Tahoe. Huge living room, great for crashing out on the couch. The only thing underwhelming about the place is that the kitchen is small with a shortage of cabinet space. I forgot to mention washer/dryer too.

Oh yeah, also Huckwheat used to live here! I found my own room here by accident, not through him, but I sure am thankful for the livin' space.

Two things I forgot to mention.

Pets: no dog ability 'cause my housemate has 2 cats. I know that's unusual for a mountain town, but that's the way it is.

Shop: I should have added that in addition to salespeople, we need part time EXPERT bicycle builders just to help us keep up with bike sales. We can't build quality full-suspension bikes as fast as people are buyin' em so we fall behind mid-season. Not looking for more mechanics in training, we need someone who is 100% tight on turning boxed bikes into sellable product at a quality that you'd want your own friends to buy.

    THANKS BSS!

When I first moved to N.Cal in 1998 form Central Cal I got a job out an outdoor retail store in SacTown. It was a fun job and is largely responsible for evolving my love for the mtns into more than just snowboarding. I learned about (and fell in love with) backpacking which led me to get into snow camping for turns and mild rock climbing. Good stuff.

I’m a bit a tech weenie and gear head too so it was a good fit. I also have decent sales and communication skills so it was easy to pick up. I really enjoyed the job and the people I met.

The downside is the compensation. I have a family of four and as much as I could fit the bill (and thoroughly enjoy) the position, there is no way I could support my family on the wages the position pays.

Thanks again for the thought though!

Good luck with the search too e-o!

The Snowflower House Rules!! So many good memories, great house, great people, great location. Only moved because Britney and I are getting married, and are done with having roommates.

SnowWhite and SnowBeard lived there too....but also moved out.

    Only pics I could find:

    Great yards...and landscaping.

Plenty of parking (if you have a Toyota or Subie)....this was a big ski weekend (obviously).

The former house (was 5 roomates, now will be 4)....this was my 30th bday....definately isnt a party house, but the people are great and for a bday....things are chill.

Edit: just saw there is a Kellie sighting at the right side of that picture.

Ha, I think I have been to a party at that house before. Is it in TD? Also, I will give a big thumbs up to the Backcountry store. I frequent it, and always have had great service and advice from the staff, plus they carry the good stuff as far as bikes, skis and gear goes.

Telegasam, we should meet up sometime. We probably recognize one another, but just haven't been formally inroduced! I will be back up tomorrow night and was gonna actually pop in the store Fri morning, as I need some new egg beater cleats for my new mtb shoes. you guys have 'em in stock?

Big thumbs up to The BackCountry!! All good peeps and happy to give out advice (even non-gear-related stuff).

That house looks super-familiar. I think I might have been to a party there, too....or at least driven by it a couple hundred times.

Dont all 700 A Frames in Truckee look the same? It is actually pretty outta the way....end of a culdesac at the top of Sierra Meadows (hence the great location).

I have been really impressed with Backcountries Forum too.....just discovered it when I met Telegasm. Great local beta.

It was the inside shot that looked familiar...but yer right..the outside construction of many of the homes is pretty generic.
