Why are my SPDs so markerish?

For example, when we ride around campus (urban type shit), and trails I like to be able to pull up the back of my bike with the pedals. Yeah I guess that's somewhat of a novice thing to do but it's helpful. Why so they sometimes just pop when I try to pull straight up. Im walking the line between them being too tight to clip out in techy spots, and too loose to be doing what I want.....

So I guess my question is does anyone else have this problem? Is there another cleat/pedal situation that works significantly better than SPD?

    Thanks...

    Just bought brand new ones.

I tried rob's old platforms the other day, and granted the pins are worn and not very grippy, but I was incredible uncomfortable and rode like shit. Basically, I don't have the skills to ride platforms. And I just like the clip in. So suck it.

Oh and I weighed the surly the other day. 35lbs. Pretty respectable with the rubber on there now I'd say....

    ATAC...or even cranks...

Used SPD at one time, changed to ATACs and never could see myself going back.

    Times/Eggbeaters=Look/Sollys SPDs=Markers

And learn to ride the bike instead of relying on being attached to it to bunnyhop/lift the damn thing.

Probably doesnt help that you are simply jumping up with 35 pounds attached to your feet, try some finesse.

Most of my riding friends have switched to Crank Brothers pedals (i.e. eggbeaters) for DH or XC or whatever. I haven't, but only because of money really. And yes, for urban/tomfoolery learn to ride flats.

Oh and I know I suck. No need to emphasize that.

Probably switch to times eventually when the money is there...

    Z,

As soon as I can find a pair of platform clipless combo (Mallets or Times) on the cheap, I am ditching my ATAC pedals.

I am too much of a jong not to have part platform/part clipless

How about I give you my old ATACs, you buy new cleats, and then learn to ride flats for urban stuff? And then take a picture when you nail your balls on your bike stem.

for the record: eggbeaters / mallets / candy's are the worst pedals ever.

pre-release everytime you hit the underside of the pedal on a rock, since there are only 2 springs.

Maybe you should stop hitting the underside of your pedals on rocks.

Worse than the old Onza elastomer pedals? I had those... never released when you needed them to, frequently released while riding. Markerific.

For the record: any pedal without adjustable spring tension = sucks.

I don't know jack about clipless 'cause I haven't been on them for years.

But if you learn to bunnyhop proper, the cleats won't be popping out. Don't jump the bike up all at once. Start with pulling up the front wheel then roll the wrists forward to bring the back up.

And yes, you should do urban monkeyin with flats, not clipless. Of course they're going to feel wierd/sorthless the first few times. But stick with 'em for a few rides and you'll figure it out.

Cool. Thanks. Gotta get that working....How would you describe the motion of pulling your bike up on something (maybe 2 feet high) without using the clipless to pull up? Something that you would smash with your bashgaurd otherwise...

Z, this may be really simple.... but I thought I'd check... you tightened the springs on your pedals, correct? Also, make sure you have the shimano cleats to go with the shimano pedals. Sometimes generic brand cleats are not as reliable in Shimano pedals.

Well, then you're just too damn heavy for your pedals. They need to have a higher DIN setting

You are hereby cordially invited to ride the trails off of Teton Pass with me and my crew. I'm thinking lithium and Phillips.

    We really need the entertainment.
