    WTF Silverton???

    Updated 5/23/06.

Bike Season 5 Days Only this Year. We will be open for Summer DH/Freeriding starting Friday June 30 through and including July 4th(Tues).

What's the reasoning behind this? Spending a month to build new trails then closing because it isn't cost effective to stay open? I'm confused.

If they can't swing it, they can't swing it. Building trails is WAY cheaper than running lifts....trust me, I know!! (permitting, insurance, staffing, maintenance, sometimes it is better to just 'make the call'. ) I don't know the details at Siverton, but we face the same issues at Targhee. (I am the 'trail architect' for them). If the lifts weren't running already for sightseeing, there is no way GT could afford to run them just for cyclists...who, in general, rarely pay retail for summer lift tickets.
That being said, there is currently no good lift served riding at GT. If we get the permitting this summer, I should be able to start building trail to-from the top!

EDIT: I hope Silverton can get outside funding for summer operations...reality is a BITCH!!

I understand your P.O.V., but...who is going to pay for it? (operations)
Just wondering what public viewpoint is...lord knows winter revenues cannot possiby begin to support summer operations...I am pretty sure no profit has been generated, yet. SO, who pays? 'Sauce' ain't cheap, weak OR strong!!

Perhaps I am misreading, but it seems like they are using June to build a trail... then opening for 5 days.... then, who knows? Why not remain open after they just built a trail. It would make sense if they were gonna use the rest of the summer to build more trails in hopes of bringing in more people when they open.
