the most recent cringe-inducer i've heard is the slightly stoopid cover of 'leaving on a jet plane.' they make up for it with the cover of the 'just cause she dances go-go, that don't make her a ho, no' song.

I dont know the artist who covered it, but some reggae group made of cover of "Somebody to Lean on" a few years ago. Turned a peaceful, calming melody to shit.

Will Young's cover of 'Light My Fire'.

And if you don't know who he is or never heard the cover (both impossible in the case of UK-based minions), consider yourselves lucky.
You really need to stop knowing WTF you're talking about. (Tippster)

Truly, stunningly bad. It sounds like a high school student messing around with Apple Soundtrack software. I thought it was a joke the first time I heard it.

You guys are forgetting perhaps the most recently released "Worst cover ever." That dubious honor belongs to the assclown Kid Rock. He took a great song by Bad Company (I think) called "Feel Like Making Love" and transformed it into a song like everything else that comes out of his mouth . . . . . which is a steaming pile of crap.
I have to agree with this statement! I heard this for the first time this morning. Worst thing I have ever heard. I am hoping the covulsions stop soon. Did somebody actually tell him that he sounded good in this song?
Samuel L. Jackson as Jules Winnfield: Oh, I'm sorry. Did I break your concentration?

"We Can Work It Out" is probably the one you're thinking of,
on the album "Signed, Sealed & Delivered".

There is also an obscure Stevie WOnder cover of "Love Me Do" that he did at a Montreux JazzFestival in Japan, but I don't think it was ever released.

Here's an interesting source for covers.

You guys heard Richard Cheese? Think lounge-style covers of Nirvana, Radiohead and RATM...hilarious.

    Best:

Hendrix - Like a Rolling Stone (Live)
    SRV - Little Wing

More good covers...I heard Yonder Mountain String Band cover some Floyd at the Fox in Boulder...and it was good.

Still haven't made up my mind about Jack Johnson's version of "Badfish." Neil Young at Red Rocks KICKED ASS!!! Even though he played Greendale.

I was watching High Life in the basement. My mom comes down right at the Collins Bros/Cattabriga kicker Eurotour segment where someone is doing that song justice. My mom exclaimed, "Hey, I know this song, it's on my Tom Jones cd!"

I heard it a couple days later, and it's absolutely awful. It's painful. He puts no passion into it at all.

Tom Jones: "Oh. Black Betty. Ba lam. Ba lam. Oh."

    What a dumb ass.

I love Sublime, but their cover of Scarlet Begonias makes me want to wretch and stab myself with a dull plunger.

Come on Mettalica doing Turn the Page was not bad, hell I liked it. Of course I used to be a Metallica nut so I guess my view is kind of skewed. Also, Mettalica's Tuesdays Gone is awesome. John Rocker on Harmonica and Les Claypool on banjo, plus the vocalist from Alice in Chains makes on hell of a combination.
And what the hell is this about American Pie? That is one hell of a drinking song, although you are right Maddona raped it pretty bad.
The Kid Rock cover mentioned earlier is one of the most hidieous things I have ever heard, someone put him out of his misery.
One of the best covers I have ever heard is Weezer doing Hit Me Baby One More Time, if they had done it originally instead of Britney Spears It would be so much easier to listen to.

So now that we are all once again aware of the worst covers of all time, someone needs to start a best drinking song thread. I vote for Jimmy Buffet and Alan Jackson, " Its Five o'Clock Somewhere" or maybe Eamon "Fuck It." Come on you know you all have those songs that you have to hear/sing when your shitfaced. What are your's?
