    Acer Laptops?

    Any opinions?

They seem quite a bit cheaper than others - is there a reason for this? Case in point: Acer 5003 WLMi, AMD T64 processor, 1 GB Ram, 100 GB storage, dvd burner and such goes for about $1000 CDN.

    Should I stay away?

Sick and ashamed and happy (and give me some horror stories),

I haven't been in the laptop buying market for a while, so I'm about 2 years out of date, however from what I recall Acer is well respected.
look around notebookforums.com for more info.

They don't review the particular one you are looking at however you can check out reviews of other acers here :

Acer is based in Taiwan, and manufacture there too, so they price lower to draw customers from better known japanese and american brands (kinda like korean cars)

I haven't owned one, but I've heard they are reliable and a very good value.

My main computer at the moment is an old Acer 710DX - It is on it's last leggs with bolts through the screen edge and ducktape. But it was made in 98' and runns wireless internet even manages to edit 5mp pix for posting here. So as reliability goes I'd say their pretty good..

Seconded for my Notebook (3 years in use - no defects, still working well). Had a Dell Inspiron before and was pretty unhappy with the overall quality, especially with the shitty keyboard.

Acer anything is cheap Chinese crap. Avoid it!

I had an Acer tablet PC laptop (C100) that never fully died but it also frustrated me constantly with little annoyances and bugs. An Acer LCD monitor was included with my desktop PC and it's just a sort of cheap display that works ok but hurts your eyes a little. Other friends have the same opinion.

Not all Acers are manufacturered in Tiawan, some are make in main land China factories. You really can't go by where the corporate headquarters are any more.

Acer is one of the biggest manufacturers of systems in the world for laptops (top 5 probably) and they make some for other companies too.

Only issue that I notice is the replacement parts are harder to get than say a Toshiba or Lenovo (which used to be IBM) which seem to have more parts suppliers (3rd party stuff like batteries, etc.)

Our CTO has the C110 tablet and loves it.

He is going to upgrade (cause he is in charge of his budget) to:

I just asked him what he thinks about the company and he said nothing but great things. Good Customer Support too.

And he has been through MANY computers!

A couple of our service techs are using Acers for field work, which is oilfield service in N Ab and BC. They've had nothing but good things to say about them and would have put them through some abuse, for sure.

I've been researching notebooks and I was looking at the Travelmate 8200. I've heard a good deal of qualms over the build quality of the notebooks. Excellent performance but very questionable chassis on them. Some say it was a bad batch though and the rest are legit.
