Photo TR: A wet romp through Zion's Subway

Good omen for a trip with 2 meteorologists, a psychologist, and a guide-in-training...

Kelly and I, 3 weeks til' the wedding...

    The approach hike

    Gearing up

    Dropping in

    COLD WATER!

    Warm water...

    "The Subway"

It's a great trip from the top down, if you can score a permit, I'd highly recommend grabbing it! Technically the route is called "Left Fork North Creek" and it's inside the boundaries of Zion National Park.

So that's where all those National Geographic ADVENTURE cover shots come from... That place looks so cool. Nice TR, way to get some summer stoke on.

Thanks for the canyoneering stoke, can't wait to go get cold and dirty.

BTW, how do you like the 5.10 canyoneering shoes? I have always used a beat up pair of trail runners, but those things look sweet.

If you're a 1,000ft above it, no problem. But if you're coming into land on your paraglider and you see this 'little devil', you're up for some hurtin.

Outfitters are so so so expensive to go canyoneering with, if we go again you can join us, but it may be a while. With basic climbing skills, good route information, and a bit of rental gear anyone can do the Subway, it's not very hard from a technical standpoint.

You can pick up everything you need at Zion Adventure Company in Springdale. They also offer guide services, but since guiding is not allowed on technical routes inside the National Park, they go to other spots just outside the park boundary.

Zion is a great place to get started in canyoneering, since there's good beta available for the area, well established routes in the park, and enough traffic that if you did run into trouble, you wouldn't have to wait days for a rescue.

Along with that comes more traffic, higher fees, and the chance you might not get a permit for what you want on the day you want it, so it's not perfect, but it's a great way to see a side of the park most people don't even realize exists.

Agghhh....so facking cool. I've wanted to do that since I first layed eyes on Zion a few years back. Looks like a great trip! How long did it take top to bottom? I seem to remember reading it's a decent (10? 15? mile) day...

It's about 10 miles total - took us 12 hours last year car to car with just the two of us, and 9 hours this year (with 3 more people) so knowing where you are going really helps. It's best to have two cars, spot one at the bottom and shuttle to the top - hitching a ride on Kolob Terrace road can take a while.

The Subway used to be a one-night backpack until the "waste disposal" issue got to be too much of a problem, so now no camping is allowed and LNT knowledge is asked about as part of getting the permit. And as legend has it, the permits only started when there was a Boy Scout Jamboree in the area and something like 1000 scouts went through in a weekend.
