    So, does a dent in a frame = fu@ked?

I'm in a sea of used frames, and I'm drowning.

On one side, i've got boutique frames that I'd like to hump just as much as I'd like to ride. But, they cost about as much as a months rent/mortage.

On the other side, I've got used boutique frames that have some dings and dents, but they're in ever-expanding galaxy that is ebay (and craigslist, and pinkbike...), so I can't actually see, smell, or ride them. Instead, I get fuzzy pictures of the bike from 30'. But these seem in my price range. (like 3-500 ish)

Then, behind me, I have (currently) a fisher cake 3 with a decent dent on the drive-side of the chainstay. I like this bike...i do. But when I sit on a Yeti 575 (or a Titus Motolite {sick}) it makes me.....aroused. So, alas, I lust.

What ever will I do? Do i drop a load on a new shiny frame and then get fucked b/c I'm financially screwing my family (got a kid, a wife, and a biz), or do I ride my fisher until I destroy the frame? Or do I drop a couple hundy on something else that's all dented, and sell my dented fisher frame to some sap even poorer than I?

Depends on where the dent is and how big. I have a good sized dent in my 575, but Krispy said not to worry about it (it's in the thickest part of the frame.)

Can't really help you with the rest - you know your financial situation better than any of us can.

Though personally, I'd never buy a bike online that I can't see first. I always set it up so I can pick it up and pay in person (assuming it's as described), or find one that's in an area where a friend can pick it up and do the transaction for me.

Or, you could buy a non-boutique frame in good condition that doesn't break the bank...

    ok, enlighten me..

I don't see too many reign's around. All specialized frames are still too spendy (although my LBS will sell me a S-Works '05 for $800 frame only, but still to much). I don't like GT. I'm getting rid of a fisher. I don't like trek's (back to my fisher). I also don't like K2's. What else is there? Cannondale?

Sounds like you're in the market for a 5~6 inch travel trail bike?
You got the Giant, Kona, rocky mountain, jamis...
Dunno if they're making any descent full suspension frmaes now, but there's khs, iron horse, and tomac.

Have you even talked to a Fisher rep about your current issue yet [as instructed by several maggots the first time you asked about this?]

If not, stop posting about all this new window shopping shit until you have done so.

I have a Reign 1 and so far I love it. It is my first full suspension and has taken a while to get used to. It is also the only bike I have had that isnot a specialized. The Reign was not as aggressive as I like but I am getting used to tha as well. Overall the Reign is a good bike with great components. I have built my others from the fram up. That is fun but takes time and a little more $$.

Take a spin on a Reign, you won't be dissapointed.

So, I did talk to Fisher, and the main hombre at my LBS regarding the dent in my chainstay. The deal is, I can get a 'wreck replacement', but it'll still cost me something. What it'll cost, I don't know, as the procedure is fairly lengthy, with emailing pics and jumping through some hoops.

We checked the dropout spacing, and it's still ok. I can't get the place of the dent to flex, and it's not on any welds. Advice from the mechanic at the shop is to ride it, and it'll probably not be a big deal. My biggest concern is that i'm tweaking on the carbon fiber seatstay, but LBS-guy didn't think so, as there are no stress fractures or anything in the seatstay. The drivetrain is also working good, so alingment isn't so bad. After further inspection the dent doesn't seam so bad. Definately not a crease at all...the cracked paint and the little plastic protector-sticker that came on the bike made it look creased. Once I cleaned it up with a soft brush, I found it was definately kinda a 'rounded' dent.

So, I guess that's another option: pay $$ to get that frame fixed with a new swingarm. But, if I'm going to drop dough, then i might as well put it into a new frame, as I don't really have a hard-on for the cake.

    I'm looking at:
    Titus Switchblade
    Titus Motolite
    Yeti 575
    Blur LT
    reign?
    slayer
    int 5.5

But, still, I'm waiting for a dream deal, patiently.

    thanks

    Sorry to sound apathetic, but...

Bikes are meant to be ridden 'til they are broken, not dented.
Go ride. When it breaks, then worry (and buy a Slayer).

Sounds like you're more interested in a new high end frame more then getting out and riding to me.....

I actually think Marshal had it right. He is more interested in posting five threads on this topic than anything else.

whoa. I think that's a little harsh, especially coming from someone that has ten times the amount of posts that i have. At least if I post b/c I have a question, not to flame.

I thought this was a forum that you could ask questions from people who have more experience. I'll admit it: I've only been mountain biking regularly for a couple of years...so I don't know much about bikes. I've always had beater bikes, and I don't know shit about forks and sram and spv and stem length and vpp vs horst. Umm...that's why i'm here, asking. I was told that a dent in alu makes it way weaker, but then I see everyone riding around with bikes that look like they went through a midwestern hail storm, so I asked a question.

You've got it right, though. I'm more interested in posting five threads than anything else. So far since friday i've put 40 miles on my bike, with about 6k' gain. Hiked 13 miles (carrying a 1.5 year old) to summit two peaks. Camped at a lake with a couple of other families with kids, and did a bit of fly fishing (i'm learning). I took saturday mostly off.
I'm not saying I'm some uber-powerhouse (jah knows i'm not), but I'm certainly not some desk jockey who just wants a fancy frame so I can shine her up at the office. I rode a friends switchblade, another friends stumpy120, and test rode a 575, and I love the feel of longer travel and the lower standover height...so, I'm shopping around and asking advice.

I wasn't aware that among the million little rules you "maggots" have about your board, posting multiple topics (three, thank you, and they were all different) was so frowned on. Anyway, get over it. I'll be out on my new (to me) 575, or I'll be on my cake, or I'll be riding your mother. Either way, I'll have a smile on my face, enjoying the mountains. You can sit infront of your computer and rag on me all you want.

    Edited to add:
    1) Is a dent a warranty issue? Question. Answered. Thanks.
    2) Help suggest a frame? Question. Anwered. I took a look at the motolite (liked the sb, but not made anymore) and really like titus bikes. Shopping around.
    3) How bad does a dent have to be to be BAD? Answered. If it's not on a weld, or at a thin/vulnerable place than it's probably ok. Then, flamed.
To me, these seem like three seperate ?'s. If I had put them all in the original thread, wouldn't you jong me for thread drift or something???

Are you going to be holding the 1.5 yo while riding my mom?

    You are a sick fuck.

That wasn't a flame, but an observation. And you had it coming since you flamed a maggot with three times the posts you had earlier. JONG.

Bragging about how many vert you climbed this weekend won't get you anywhere either on this board. While you were out climbing 6k, all I had to do was climb up into your bed to feed it your wife.

Now that your questions are answered, I still expect you sack up and get the Yeti. I spent the last of my law school loan money on one. Subsequently, I am living on cheese sandwiches. We all make decisions.

Now, that's some flaming I can respect. I like the part about feeding it to my wife. She's a great, strong woman. But, she does love the dick. god bless her. I'm glad you had a good time with her, considering how much fun I've had with yours.

Agreed that bragging about vert on here isn't going to get me anywhere, as (From what i've read) there are defintaly some more hardcore than I motherfuckers up on here. But, I'm not a desk jockey, and spend as much time as I can outside. My new thing: night riding singeltrack. whoa. I used to laugh at fat old rich guys on $3k bikes. but, now I want one. I guess it's because I'm older and fatter then ever before.

I probably will sack it up and buy the 575. Found one for about $1500 built pretty nice (X9, Fox Vanilla 130) and in good shape. Then, I'll sell my cake.

    Congrats on law school.

observation: lots of tension on this board.

You're a sick fuck 'cause you want to hump my mom. Even if I wasn't related, I would still have to give her the ANTI-milf status.

I have issues with people posting about hanging out with their kids and then wanting to rail someone's mom-even if she's a 5-7" travel ride.

ANON. Don't characterize it as tension, so much as a hazing initiation...

Thankfully I am not married, so my "wife" is safe. And I still have one more year of school left. But hopefully I can swing the same skimpy living style and have some loan money left over
