    Only in Missouri?

Town may evict unmarried couples with kids
Couple with 3 kids denied occupancy permit after moving to Missouri town
    http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/12835020/

BLACK JACK, Missouri - The city council has rejected a measure allowing unmarried couples with multiple children to live together, and the mayor said those who fall into that category could soon face eviction.

Olivia Shelltrack and Fondrey Loving were denied an occupancy permit after moving into a home in this St. Louis suburb because they have three children and are not married.

The town's planning and zoning commission proposed a change in the law, but the measure was rejected Tuesday by the city council in a 5-3 vote.

"I'm just shocked," Shelltrack said. "I really thought this would all be over, and we could go on with our lives."

The current ordinance prohibits more than three people from living together unless they are related by "blood, marriage or adoption." The defeated measure would have changed the definition of a family to include unmarried couples with two or more children.

Mayor Norman McCourt declined to be interviewed but said in a statement that those who do not meet the town's definition of family could soon face eviction.

Black Jack's special counsel, Sheldon Stock, declined to say whether the city will seek to remove Loving and Shelltrack from their home.

    Un-fucking-believable.

I'd say "in this day and age".... but that's just it. In this day and age it seems we're regressing as a society.

So you think it's cool to evict them? Just because they aren't married? It's a two-parent family, seems pretty solid relationship since they're together with kids, maybe marriage isn't something they condone. Maybe they are part of the marriage boycott (http://www.unmarried.org/marriage-boycott.html. Maybe finances prevent marriage. Maybe maybe maybe.....but whatever the reason, does the town have the right to evict them because they aren't married? So closeminded.

Look closer at my post. I said nothing other than that unmarried parents are a sign of the regression of society.

Didn't agree nor disagree with the eviction policy.

Maybe you're the closeminded one, care to compare the ideals of "freedom" between the two states we choose as home?

I'm not sure "regressing" is the right word. I don't know any time in our history when people thought it was OK to be so invasive in their attitudes toward others.

What's fucked up about this, is that the town council has to pass a measure to allow unmarried couples with multiple children to live together in the first place...meddling mother bitches

It is clearly unconstitutional and a violation of the federal Fair Housing Act Ammendments of 1988.

College towns try to pass ordinances like this regularly to limit the number of people who live in rentals near campus. Missoula does, anyways.

    Pure fucking bullshit.

This is what I saw in Tucson also. Although the reasoning that I heard/read was that it was antiquated ordinance intended to allow alternate ways for police to bust "suspected" houses of prostitution.

I can understand limiting the number of people at a house, I sure do think that if 20 people lived in the 3 bedroom house next door, I'd see a negative impact on my quality of living.

This is silly though, it's a shame (depending on the situation, there are definately exceptions, but you don't have to agree with me) that these folks are not married and have children together and live together, but it is absurd to evict strictly for that reason....

they tried that kind of regulation north of here to keep 40 illegals from occupying a single family home (10 people in the garage, 5 in the backyard shed, etc etc). didn't work.

thats screwed up. they'll sue and they'll win
