I just got a PS 2 network adapter and its sweet, but the only problem is that i have one ethernet cable spot thats pluged into my computer, its a bitch to get to and switch from compter to playstation. Is there anyone who makes a thing to make one port into two? like a telephone split jack thingy? where would i pick one of these things up and how much will it cost? Any help would be appreciated

You'll need a router. Plug your internet access (assuming you've got a cable/DSL connection), PC and PS/2 into one of these and you're set. The wired ones are around $40-50...wireless is the way to go, only a little more money (of course, you have to spend another $40-50 for an adapter for the PS/2, but you wouldn't have wires going from the PS/2 to the router).

or you can get a hub which is probably cheaper me thinks. one or the other, the router is probably a bit more complicated than the hub but ....yeah.

That was hard to read and I'm a tech-type guy.

There are 2 ways to go:

Buy a router ($60). Your Cable modem or ADSL modem plugs into the router. Plug the computer and PS2 into the router. The computer and PS2 share a single IP address (it's magic). Done. Both can be online at the same time.

Buy a hub ($30). Your ISP can sell you a second IP address for some dollars a month. Plug the modem into the "out" port and the computer and PS2 into "in" ports. The computer gets it's own IP address and the PS2 gets it's own IP address. (You don't want to be disconnected from this board while playing games.) Done.

i think i'm going to go with a router, I'd like to go wireless because I have a laptop that it would be cool to get up and running what am I looking at in terms of $$$ for hooking up my main computer, my PS2 and the laptop. links to the aproprete products would be most apreciated. Failing that I'll hold off on the wireless and simply go with wires because right now the PS is sitting right under the cable modem so exess wiring isn't a problem

just thought of something as I searched around the net, there doesn't seem to be an adapter that makes the PS 2 wireless, it has to be hardwired in with a ethernet cable, is there a place on the wireless routers that i can do that or does it all have to be wireless? If I can't hardwire the playstation it kinda defeats the whole point of going wireless in the first place!

A wireless router has antennas (for wireless) AND ports for wired. Plugging in your PS2 and going wireless with the laptop sounds just right.

Just to add to the confussion there are 3 types of wireless: 802.11b (11Mb/s) 802.11a, and 802.11g (100 Mb/s). (The number 802.11 refers to the id of the technical specification.) Since you are limited by the speed of your cable modem (2-4 Mb/s) get an 802.11b (also called WiFi) router and matching PC Card. That's the cheapest way. I think Macs use 802.11a

Up here in Canada a D-Link wireless router is $98 and a PC Card for a laptop is $59. That's $US120. Plus taxes of course.

Skip the wireless unless you get a 2.4 Gh (54 meg throughput but more expensive). Wireless really sux for gaming unless you get the 2.4. Even then I would go for a combo router for both ethernet and wireless, so you can have the best of both worlds. You can still use your laptop for wireless and cat5 cable for your ps2. At home I have a Nortel Instant Internet 7 port router and hung a Netgear wireless access point off of it for my wife's system and so I can use my laptop on the screen porch. The rest of my house is hard wired for fastether -- data jacks all over the house. My kids always bitch about my wife's system (p4 2.4 gh)getting lagged and go back to using their slower systems that are on fastethernet.

but i'm not using the wireless for gaming just surfing the web the ps would be pluged into the router that was pluged into the cable modem right??????????????????

It's one box with a radio (the wireless part) plus plugs for your cable modem and one or more computers (like the PS2). It also has a firewall to protect you from evil hackers. This particular router has encrypted wireless so nobody can snoop or connect to your network. That's a good thing.
