I flew over new years w/beacon and batteries (but off) in my checked bag. They searched it (and left a nice little note), but didn't bother my stuff...

1 1/2 yrs ago I traveled with crampons, ice axes, ropes, skis, all that stuff. Just checked it, they didn't seem to care that we had it, just made us put it in a place where it wouldn't possibly poke through a bag and hurt a bagger dude.

should be fine i would imagine. i've flown with fuel and stove and other random camp stuff a bunch, never any problemos. just be on the safe side, be sure to include a note in your bags that says "stop going through my stuff you fascist tsa monkeyfuckers!" or something to that effect...

Thanks for the info. I'll let ya know how it goes. Got any advise about the trace quantities of illicit substances imbedded in the top left pocket of my jacket?

I flew after 9/11 with my soft case, which had more than trace embeded in it. It also had all my electronics, which i guess looked conspicuous, as well as a 'killer' staple remover, which for some gay reason drew alot of attention. They fully searched me and the bag, wiped it with a swab and ran it through the "sniffer". Obviously that thing doenst snif erb, came back with the green light and was sent on my way. After I got home and emptied my bag, I found a seed and a stem in there. Trace is no problem.

Carrying compressed flammable gasses is a gross violation of FAA regulations. Of course... I've done it several times no prob.

Avvy beacon is no problem. Do make sure it is off.

I know people who have never had thier GPS x-rayed by insisting it is vital life saving equiptment.

That's interesting. I've carried MSR canisters on board several times and never had any problems. Do you know what the fine would be?

I would guess the probe and shovel would be a no go. The beacon may get checked but they will allow it.

edit - oh, checked? No problem with that stuff. I would take the beacon as carry on though.

Beacon is cool in the carryon, and shovel ok in the pack

I tried to check an empty, never-been-used fuel bottle with the cap off and in a separate bag and TSA wouldn't let me because it was paraphenalia . . . since it said fuel, it was not allowed. Went home, sanded off the lettering, and then checked it. Ridiculous!

If in Utah, bring the article in question by for a courtesy sniff. The pooches will pre-screen you and it before entering the airport

stick some headphones in the beacon and I bet they'll think it's an mp3 player.

I've flown with mine in carry on a couple times and haven't had a problem, even checking in at customs.

I've flown recently with the beacon in carry on with no problems.
Checked would be even less of a problem.

Avalanche Pager? Does it beep you with instructions when you're about to get walloped?

I've brought mine in the carry on and not had any problems. Just in case an explanation was needed I've brought the instructions for the beacon, but never have been questioned.
