    BCA low fat climbing skins

I just picked up a pair of the BCA low fat climbing skins and have them cut to my skis and the tip and tail hardware is setup properly. I just tested them out in my backyard today and noticed that there is some space at the tip where snow was getting underneath the skin.

When setting the skins up with the skis I tried to make the tip area tight so that snow wouldn't get underneath. If any of you are familiar with the tip hardware setup...(if you aren't check it out )here ) the skin overlaps itself as it goes through the metal ring and sticks to itself on the other side. This creates a thicker section near the tip and less glued area to stick to the ski. Its only a little bit near the top. Is this normal? or should there be no snow getting underneath? At this point in time I'm thinking it would be difficult NOT to allow snow in, but being my first experience with skins I'm not sure.

With the newer ski tips (less curve, therefore less distance above snow), yes it is normal. That's part of the reason why the newer tip attachments have become popular (i.e. Ascension Clipfix, G3/Glidelite) - the skin fold ends up being a little further up the ski.

Yes, the less adjustment you have the better. If it really bugs you, modify with any new tip and tail kit you like.

    Cool

I don't think that is normal at all. I would advise you to grab a cardboard box and some tape, package them up, send to me for further testing.

thanks a lot for the info. Being a newbie and all with this stuff I wanted to make sure.

freakofsnow- if I send you the skins in a cardboard box, can you send me your skis in return?

One more thing. Those plastic things the skins came rolled up on. I put the skins back on those when they are not on my skis (I assume thats what your supposed to do). The plastic things suck though, they are static which attracts hairs and every other particle you could imagine that will stick to the skin glue. I've seen my friends Black Diamond skins and they have a nice rubber mesh. Whats the deal?

Isn't it fairly difficult unsticking them and does it ruin the glue? I'm assuming a no on this?

It's the way it's been done for a long, long time. No it doesn't ruin the glue. The dirt crap that you were accumulating on your plastic sheet will. Biggest problem can be seperating the skins if it's cold & their wide. Bitch.

Got it, thanks for the help. I'm a hopeless newbie with skins and no background with them except that they get you to the goods.

    See you out there.

and yeah, that dump almost cracked the bowl when it came out.

it's ok, you were still faster than nhAlpineTurns. we'll track down a heel bale from bob smith's or something.

yeah, the tour was fun. if i had stopped at the shitter beforehand i don't think i would have minded the slog nearly as much. i suppose i could have stopped on the way, but that would break my streak of never ever having crapped outside, and i just couldn't throw away 23 yrs of hard work like htat....
