Angry Where did all the “Hardcore” people go?

I have to believe that if more people chilled out a bit in Jan. and Feb. and skied later in the year Tahoe places would stay open longer.

So, all these ski places are closing up due to lack of interest! In Jan. and Feb. I deal with crazy drivers, tons of people, rude people in line, and from time to time the guy who is trying to be a badass on skies just being a dick to everyone.

Now it’s May and it doesn’t look to disappoint in Mammoth and no one is there? What’s up with that? I’m thinking about only skiing from March to June just so I don’t have to deal with all the people. Time to buy new A.T. gear and get back into the backcountry Jan. and Feb.

only about 2% people that hit the slopes regularly are like us... so once it get's warm in the bay area they forget all about it. Squaw was ripping today , lots of out of towners still suprisingly , but all the "hardcore" people as you put it were definatley there. It's just a money thing.

    novelty skiers

I guess that’s true there is a huge difference between novelty skiers and people who ski for sport. But it seems like there should be more then 2%.

It CAN be helpful that people have their priorities all fucked up, as in how mid week powder days can be like a ghost town, or spring corn can be left to those who have their priorities straight, however, most people have their priorities all fucked up.

I figure it's ski season as long as there's snow to slide on. Now I have to hike to get to it. Later I'll just hike, but those who quit skiing in March because the sun shines in the valley, I will always accuse of having their priorities fucked up, just because I like to think of things in a way that makes me feel smarter than them, so there. BTW, you must be drunk.

If you can't find enough hardcore people I suggest googling "hardcore." There seem to be a lot of them. I think they are mostly indoors, though.

damn, that sounds just like Cohee's editorial from a few years back.

but, yeah, other hobbies mostly, and taking care of some of the work/house shit i have put off all winter in order to not miss any pow.

Plus, i must not be hardcore, cause i start to lose focus come early april and my skiing goes from bad to worse.

"Hardcore" skiers/snowboarders have seasons passes. Resorts don't care about them until their seasons pass sales go down. Resorts care about hotel bookings and $80 day tickets bought from people that travel from Texas and New York.

Well that hits the nail on the head. One of the owners at Snowbowl refers to us who buy season passes (and consequestly provide up front operating captial for the year) as "assholders" and generally looks upon us with contempt. Of course not only to passholders pay up front, but we also spend more money on the mountain (largely in the bar) than the folks who buy tickets a few days a year. Once the hobby skier visits slow down, they don't care about those who already paid.

that's good...but true that the people that truly appreciate the presence of snow into the spring are the nuisance to mst mtns - who like the limited schedule of the pederstrian skier/resort-goer.

i agree that season pass holders are generallly viewed poorly - like a "skier insurgencey that doesn't realize it over" to the dollar+cents folk who wanna close ASAP.

if i ran a mtn, i'm damn sure i could find ways to entice people to ski in the spring. one day out and people would be hooked..they'd have plenty of time to learn how to have fun in corn if they didn't 'get it' right off the bat...and plenty of fun+games in the meantime. it would then make sense to keep the place open for the "hardcore' who provide any mtn w/cred after all anyway...

it's lazy marketing and lack of creativity behind places closing w/so much snow. if mts. stayed open, there's be plenty of mtn bike riding and keeping it real for the ladies - and lift accessed snow to boot - not less
