    Education = owned

13 years of college education, thousands of tests, tens of thousands of dollars in tuiton, 1620 posts on TGR, a bachelor's degree, a master's degree, and today I finally graduate with a Ph.D. in psychology.

For the final humiliation I have to put on a lame velvet dress and a square hat so that the Dean can 'hood' me. Sounds vaguely homosexual but I'm not going out that way without a fight.

    Wish me luck!

It's nice to see that the excessive amount of time spent hanging out on PowderMag.com and TGR did not prevent me from gettin' 'er done.

Don't let them trick you into anything saying hooding is the first step and docking is the second.

    Way to go, Dr.!

    Thumbs up

Nice work! Are you going to be head-shrinking now? Can I sign up for sessions and get a maggot-discount?

Congrats, dude. Welcome to the real world now of actually working for a living.

Wow. That's some dedication right there, folks. Don't forget the bro modelling.

That also sounds ever so slightly ghey.

    You're owed some downtime.

I've had a "real" job for years and I'm not a headshrinker. I'm an entrepreneurial research scientist.

I had to plod along slowly because I paid (am still paying) for my education along the way myself which means working 40+ hours a week the entire time. 6 years to get the bachelors degree, 4 years for the M.S. and another 3 to get the Ph.D.

Neurophysio. Specialising in Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease, also known as Hereditary Motor and Sensory Neuropathy (HMSN). She's the brains of the operation but I can make good faces.

I meant no offense - my sister was a "Professional Student" for almost 15 years, ending up with a PhD in Anthropology.

I'm dying to know what an "entrepreneurial research scientist" does.

    No offense taken.

I'm part of a thinktank consisting of other Ph.D.s (my business partners) in research, evaluation, methodology, psychology, and education. Our bread and butter comes from writing State and Federal grants for educational entities (like school districts). These grants require an evaluation component as part of the funding (usually 15% goes to evaluation). We write the grants for free and if the program is funded we evaluate it. We also pursue federal earmarks for our clients to get Congress to deliver special appropriations to much-needed projects that are difficult to fund otherwise. My dissertation research was funded in this way.

Over the past 8 years our company has obtained about $150 million in grants for our clients.

The entrepreneurial part comes from the fact that we also pursue a variety of other business interests using our expertise. This includes everything from media production (web, print, video), food safety products (long story), data management solutions for local and state educational entities, and unique technology applications in educational settings.

For example, I'm the President of a company called thereNow: www.therenow.net. thereNow is based on my dissertation research.

So... we think deep thoughts, do research, and try to spin off new companies and products to make money and do good things.

Dedication? Most likely just stubborn. It was worth it. It's enabled me to do good work that I enjoy and to actually make a decent living. There were many times along the way when I was not sure if any of that would be the case.

That's basically what happened with me, same field actually, and I let it get the best of me. I'm also lazy as shit, so I don't think I could have taken all those years of school. I know a girl that's about to complete her masters in psych, and she ready to tear her hair out. She is going for her PhD aslo.
