    Sally 916s Expected Lifespan

After Tyrone sold me a pair of used 916s, I am now in love. I'll be looking to buy old used pairs.

So, how used is too used? Should I stay away from 916s used 200+ days? 300+? Or what?

But don't forgett that 50 days hard use is more than 300 days light use!

I think there are two main issues besides worn plastic (AFDs and those little black tabs on the toe wings). The toe wing screws can be stripped if the bindings have seen hard use when not adjusted correctly. The other one is that slop may develope in the heel piece. You shouldn't be able to wiggle that sideways. I know the latter can happen if the 5th screw on the heel piece hasn't been used.

The AFD's are the biggest issue, but can be replaced or epoxied. 916 also have a 5 year warranty from the year on the bottom of the binders.

As far as heel slop goes, yea, the heel can develop a bit of wiggle, but I've heard from trusted sources that it makes no difference. Two of my pairs have a bit of heel slop to the touch, but there is no movement once I'm clicked in.

I've got a good 300+ days on my old DR9 equipes and they still pass release tests with no problems. I assume the 916 is equal or better no?

well, basically if they look beat to shit, then they are prolly beat to shit. if they look like they are pretty good shape, then they prolly are.

when they break, its obvious (no forward pressure, loose an afd, strip the toe)

Do you know what the warranty is for 912s?

Has anyone tried to rip out the AFD's on the under side of the toe piece and see if the binding still releases properly? Word on the street is that Morrison ripped those pieces out and said you don't need them to release; with that being my source, I actually DO want to release and figured I should check here first before ripping them out. ALL of my AFD's are torn out...tried to epoxy with success on one pair but not the other.

really the issue w/o the toe pads is if you can close the wing enough to contact your boot. some racers ski with one pad off of each binding to cant more to the inside, and i've seen people pull them out for a better fit of AT boots.

so yes, you can make it work.

If you mean the plastic on the underside of the toe wing- not sure if that's really an AFD in the usual sense- then they'll release fine without them.

    Summary

Thanks all. OK, summarizing posts and PMs:

    These "flaws" are OK:
    1. Heel wiggle is OK. Everything is solid with boot clicked in.
    2. 300+ days is OK. Just look closely for other flaws.

Stay away from (or fix) these flaws:
    1. Stripped toe wing screw
    2. Cracked plastic AFD on toe piece
    3. Excessive visible wear on metal. Although the metal won't die, it may be an indicator that non-metal parts have very little life left.

Make up your own mind about these flaws:
    1. Cracked/missing plastic tabs on underside of metal toe wings might be OK (some boots work fine without those tabs)
