    Whippet Buzz Kill (literally) 5-3-06

Had ambitious plans today to ski a couple peaks over here.

But the weather was suspect, and supposed to come in mid-morning. So we went across the road to Red Baldy for a shorter tour, knowing if the weather came in, it would be easier to bail than hanging it out on the knife edge across the canyon.

So we started skinning at 5am, and found ourselves on the summit at 7:30am, with dark clouds rolling in, snow, and another strange sensation. Our whippets were buzzing with electricity and our hair was feeling kind of hyper static. The tops of the whippets were literally humming with static. Not a fun sensation on a summit. So we bailed rapidly.

    Pfeifferhorn was looking nice.

Powstash was supposed to be over there, on Timp today. Wonder if he felt the electricity in the air?

Noah off the summit, with a bit of snow, and building clouds.

    APD off the summit.

The snow never corned today, just firm, refrozen, loud snow. But a fun environment none the less.

Time for the desert. Heading down tonight. This photo was last week.

Maybe we can tag our objective next week.

When I saw this thread title, I thought you had killed Buzz with a miniature ice axe.

Haha! Glad that you got down okay, I really hate being up high when it's staticy like that sweet pics though.

In your last pic, is that the priest & nuns?

I find it odd that Red Baldy is in White Pine and White Baldy is in Red Pine. Least, that's what I was told.
You look like I need a drink.

The desert?! You can't ski in the desert!

Have fun down there. I've been itching to get on some rock lately too.

Yeah, but at least your electro-Whippets would have stopped you if you needed to self-arrest on the 60 degree slope you just climbed with your new ski crampons.

I hear the La Sals are corning up nicely. Bringing the skis down?

Have a great time down south. The Rectory is a great climbing area, Fine Jade is one of my all-time faves. Haven't been up Washerwoman, access was a little tougher back when I was climbing more, I didn't have 4WD and the Shafer wasn't graded.

So how did TH like those things anyway (the crampons, not the electro-whippets), inquiring minds want to know. Glad you guys didn't get hit by lightning.

Glad your OK. Electricity is really scary
I had a trip like that once. I felt like spiderwebs were in my face, I had just passed a couple of webs. I pulled off my hat to see if some web was stuck to it and my hair went up like a foot in the air. I jumped into a coolie with just shoes and no ice axe and got the hell outta there. 1000 vert, 40 degrees in less than the minute. I hit the ground running. Then the lightning came and I watched the very spot I was standing on 2 minutes before get hit.

I understand. I was replying to a previous poster thinking I was up skiing today, when I haven't been.

Although the weather currently looks suprisingly similar.

    Tomorrow should be fun, regardless.
