    Picture worth a thousand words?

House Speaker Dennis Hastert of Ill., center, gets out of a Hydrogen Alternative Fueled automobile, left, as he prepares to board his SUV, which uses gasoline, after holding a new conference at a local gas station in Washington, Thursday, April 27, 2006 to discuss the recent rise in gas prices. Hastert and other members of Congress drove off in the Hydrogen-Fueled cars only to switch to their official cars to drive back the few block back to the U.S. Capitol.

Aren't they required to always drive around in armored cars? I remember hearing about a Representative from California trying to get the law changed so he/she could drive their Prius around D.C.

Yes, top members of the house and senate have to (usually) ride with escorts, I think US marshalls. I had it explained to me that they are less concerned with their safety than with the extreme convienence of having a car waiting on them all of the time.

It is unfortunate that US laws and crash test standards prevent smaller cars from becoming the norm.

I would like to see greater use of natrual gas in personal vehicles. The US has a plethera of natural gas.
